  1. Those needing cancer treatment or an operation they wait years for from the NHS might well be prepared to give up their pension or savings to get it done private. They might well wish their employment meant Private Health Care or they have paid for their Private Health Care Cover. As for the I am alright Jacks, with Salary Sacrifice to buy a car, that is how the system is. That is how the UK is, social divides, have an have not's and lowest earners pay what ever without choices and those doing rather well and not just getting by can use the system. Nice if you can work the Taxation to suit and there is a good Public Health System for all from taxation.
  2. Volkswagen in dire trouble, I don't always agree with the Electric Viking, but I do on this occasion. This culture of treating the workers and often the customers badly while paying the shareholders and senior massive dividends.
  3. Yes, people in London just do not comprehend just how lucky they are compared to the rest of the country, things that they take for granted, we would almost kill for. My son works in a shop just 200 yds away from the central bus terminus where all the local shuttle buses terminate and return on their outward trips again, (we no longer have joined up bus services that take you from side of the city to the other, they all go from edge into the centre and return again, called "shuttles"). The other day he waited almost an hour for a bus to show up and this is supposed to be a 15-minute service?

Indeed, its false science! A battery of a given AH rating will lose cell voltage at a given rate for a given discharge, you cannot change the rules of physics to suit your misguided belief. You are the only person to be talking about 70's or 80's batteries (using "fact" twice for emphasis), I spoke of the zero standby current drain which has not existed since those days.
  5. "A fairly large jump in the minimum wage." What crap. take into account those just having an increase on their Mobile phone / Broadband, their car insurance, the rent, council tax, heating, water, food. Low inflation is a total kidology. Road fuels down some and stuff that people might not be able to afford because they have a Minimum wage rise from £11.44 to £12.21. 39 hour week and gross of £446/16 to £476.19 if over 21 years old. Under 18 / Apprentice £7.55 an hour, 18-20 £10 an hour.
  6. I'm wondering if it's aimed at influencers (God I hate that expression) and other vacuous wastes of breath? A car to be seen in, rather than a car to covet.
  7. google "LLLPARTS CATALOG" to find this website that has the Skoda parts catalogues. Skoda parts catalogues https://www.lllparts.co.uk/catalogs You can also use these two links for the European version of the Octavia MK2 (model years 2004-2008) and the European version of the Octavia MK2 (model years 2009-2013). It's the same website as the above. Octavia MK2 (model years 2004- 2008) (European version) https://www.lllparts.co.uk/catalogs/skoda/CZ/OCT/419 Octavia MK2 (model years 2009-2013) (European version) https://www.lllparts.co.uk/catalogs/skoda/CZ/OCT/663
  8. and your'e right @logiclee my new 2024 1.5TSi only coasts in ECO.
  9. The good news - with the EGR fix and clean there is a definite improvement in performance. Things I must have got used to before, and only noticed today by their absence, are gone. Such as, slight hesitation/judder pulling away in first such as on entering a roundabout. Bad news - still averaging 1.3 after six revs on the retest. Very little movement and that is after another Forté, the above work and a run beforehand. The terrible news - my son accidentally slipped whilst painting, fell out of his window, as a gust of wind opened the passenger door and the sharp end of his pallette knife has taken out the plate on the passenger door beam with the 0.8 plate value now lost. The boy is fine. So, new MOT booked at my usual place on Wednesday. The place I had it done last week was on a recommendation but they are the only garage I have ever been to where they "don't do emissions", not so much as a fuel cleaner and a speedy run, and my mechanic said not to go back. Seeing as they want a new booking now anyway, I will go to my usual place. Either they'll properly apply a value of 3.0 or do a fastpass (the place last week does not do them) and they tend to apply 1.5 to that so if it starts at 1.3, job done. Will of course update.
  10. You are asking a lot, and by that I mean you want to have your cake and eat it. "Where can I get a 10 year-old car with the performance, economy and reliability of a new car, that costs next to nothing to run?" I'm being a bit hyperbolic, if that's possible, but you get my point. Reframed another way, perhaps harshly, you might as well say: "I cannot afford what I want, but I must have it." You need to be clear in your head about what trade-offs you are willing to make, or you may never find what you want.
  11. I think you have a very different perspective on this situation, Wyx. There are a LOT of small terraced houses in Rural areas.
  12. It's the same in many places... Lots of flats and high rise blocks going up in many cities with zero parking provision. Pretty much everything here in Sheffield in or near the city centre that has got planning approval is the same, with zero or very minimal parking provision. Not an issue if occupiers are prepared to use public transport and the latter is good but, unlike London it isn't because we don't get anywhere near the funding per capita London gets.

In the 70's and 80's there was zero parasitic current draw when a vehicles ignition key was removed and the doors closed, ZERO! You could leave a car as long as a motor factor would leave an unsold battery on the shelf 6 months to a year. A "few" years ago with your A3, (how many years was a few?) things had changed as you said, the radio and instrument panels were drawing current to maintain the time settings, the intruder alarm would have been active all that time also powering the untrasonic sensors, the central locking module would have had the RF recieving module powered up waiting to recieve a signal from the keyfob. Todays vehicles draw 200ma plus for up to 20 minutes with Canbus modules talking to each other before hopefully finally going to sleep, you are lucky if the parasitic drain is less than 40ma, they are getting worse especially the keyless entry ones, even my towing relay draws 15ma a lot less than the 35ma of the previous ones but significant enough to halve the autonomy of my battery. You only have to watch people collecting their cars from airport car parks after a fortnights holiday to see just how many have to be jump started, the operators have multiple jump starting carts moving around the lot 24/7. If I go away for more than a week I keep a spare charged battery in the vehicle, I may not need it for a month but I am not taking any chances, the aftermarket radio alone is capable of keeping the whole Can network and all the controllers awake if it doesn't sign off, indeed any of the controllers could, in that case the battery would be flat in days. Your vehicle restarting after a 4 day shift pattern does not mean you can say that the OP is taking completely unnecessary precautions when his vehicle will be standing unused for 4 months!

Completely unnecessary, a battery in decent condition will easily start a car in the winter after not having been used for a while. I work 4 on and 4 off and even when it’s minus 3 my car (and all my previous cars) have started with no issues after 4 days without use. A few years ago I had an Audi A3 which was 3 years old, and it still started with no issues in the winter after having been sat unused for nearly 4 months. It was a particularly cold winter btw. If your battery is half decent you don’t need fancy chargers or meters etc……but it’s your money I suppose🤷🏻‍♂️ Things have moved on since the 70s and 80s folks😂
  15. So after having a few bits kicking around for long enough, that I'd ordered online. I finally found the time to give the car a bit of love. Debadged and added some cleaner looking Skoda emblems front and back. New gloss mirror caps due to a few chips and fitted the smoked, Audi style repeaters. Finished off with new numberplates, going for a Lamborghini style on the rear just cos I thought it matched the boot angles nicely. Gloss black roof wrap, smoked rear light units and front fogs courtesy of The Wrap Pod in Featherstone West Yorks. Then an amazing job done by Aaron at Aztec Valeting & Detailing in Altofts West Yorks, with interior valet & single stage paint correction and machine polish and ceramic coating. Due to a mix up, gonna have it back in with him in a couple weeks time for calipers repainting and all 4 wheels refurbed. I know the colour is a bit Marmite, but I love it! Definitely feel the detailing was money well spent
  16. Life changes forced a change in vehicle and I was very kindly offered an Octavia Scout - as it happens one whose previous owner once frequented these forums. @nidgep spared no expense in looking after this Scout - as evidenced by the awesome folder full of receipts - and I will be continuing to do so moving forwards.
  17. Will have a look in the morning for you.
  18. I gather the concept is just over 5 meters long! Perhaps they will launch the 4 door saloon first. Jaguar has a history of many 'firsts', but it's hard to see what they can achieve with this latest move. 😞 Still, as a company they were going nowhere except down, so perhaps it was right to give it a final throw of the dice. I hope it works for them, but in the words of those tv peeps " I'm out!""
  19. Have any concept cars ever made it into full production unchanged? I doubt it an I doubt the Jaaaaag will either tbh.

Acquired a similar vehicle myself recently, a 2007 and manual transmission but otherwise equivalent. Liking it so far, but lots to learn. @ColinD should read at least your first paragraph @dsolds.
  21. The UK government, of whatever flavour, come up with policy to influence consumers and achieve policies like the EV mandate. The Con governments have implemented the 22% target with penalties and the EV salary sacrifice system to encourage EV take up and Labour have continued the policy in its few months in office. Labour has introduced a fairly large jump in minimum wage and done this when inflation is low which, both apparently the CBI, applaud. UK society was, is and will very for years to come an unfair society. Rules like thr MD of companies like John Lewis would not be paid more than a certain ratio more than their lowest paid worker did no catch on sadly. Companies can do a lot more they they currently do. Providing EV charger cards an not only hydrocarbon ones would be one area as well get a move on with salary sacrifice ev schemes which are available for companies like Octopus. NI rises is to start rebuilding the NHS but it is a long road after a decade and a half of under investment in public health service. When I get offered Private medical through work I refuse it.
  22. The throttle body on your car is connected only to the engine ECU. The engine ECU has no permanent connection to 12V, it is only powered when the ignition (contact) is on or engine is running. So if it is making noise when the key is not in the ignition, there is a fault with the car's electrics, not the throttle body. I think the ECU relay would be my first suspect, perhaps its contacts are sometimes welding themselves together. This relay is in position 12 of the relay carrier in the cabin. The emissions problem may be a lambda sensor being too old, or possibly the catalytic converter. Or if you still have not checked cylinder compressions, then it may be an exhaust valve problem.
  23. The centre section of the rear seat base stands slightly higher, this is how they all are.
  24. There's a bunch of little white rockers that sit under the buttons and push down on a rubber pad that contacts the circuit board to tell your window up/down etc. They break easily. Mine were doing the same thing with front windows (you'll probably find passenger one works fine from the passenger side, etc) I replaced mine, part number 5G0 959 857 D - there are variations depending on whether you have the childlock button or the disable windows button below the window switches. IIRC it was about £65 for a genuine part. Edit: forgot to add if you're stuck with the window down and need to close it, using the comfort closing on the key should work.
  25. They had the car for three days but had some problems with their internet connection on the second day so I am not certain how long the download took.
  26. I change everything, all filters, fuel filter etc. Belts are 3 years old, clutch is similar, FWIW. I do around 15k a year, so 6000 works out around 5 months.
  27. 1 point
I installed mine on the left side.
  28. Hi @Ootohere, created a new thread and replied to you on that for simplicity. Thanks!
  29. Yeah my old 2016 work as well. But my 2021 estate does not have this option. In infotaiment should be in section open and close option easy open. But in my case is not.
  30. This winter is second with this car and last winter was same thing. From cold start if rpm higher than 1k it holds in all gears same rpm
  31. Modern Airfilters can get damp just as non modern ones do. damp / h20 freezes. -2*oC time is freezing time. So dead simple, check dead simple things. .......... DQ200 DSG and a 1.6 TDI cold weather. If the RPM is holding higher in D on tick over, what is the rpm going to when you put in S and ticking over? What is the RPM doing in P when the engine is started, or in N with the Parking Brake on, or with the foot on the brake? At above freezing or below freezing? Does the higher RPM being asked about cause any issues since the car / gearbox is in D anyway?
  32. Modern air filters are massively overspecified, I did 250000 miles on the original filter on my MK1 Octavia and only replaced it when it started falling apart, the mpg continued rising throughout the life of the vehicle. When an air filter does become blocked just like a DPF the restriction is felt at high revs not tickover. I have a couple of times noticed the 1050 rpm remaining a little longer than usual, I think its down to battery SOC and ambient conditions.
  33. When I looked into a bigger screen for a MIB1 Amundsen I was told that none of the bigger screens will work due to the different screen resolutions, and vice-versa that the MIB2 & MIB2.5 units wouldn't work with the smaller MIB1 style screen.
  34. That is exactly the scenario I described above for a failing battery. When the engine is warm it is a common problen for your engine series due to not acheiving a high crank revs. Why are you changing the tandem pump?
  35. @Graham Butcher Did you notice that the gentleman with the Scottish accent has the video about the shortage of petrol cars has an arrow pointing at a Mini Cooper SE (Electric car) on a Production line in China. That is where they are built. There was a suspension of the hand over of MINI,s BMW,s Rolls Royce RV,s because of the brake issues. There is no rationing of BMW / MINI petrol vehicles as BMW / MINI have more than met their 22% First Registration Target. Go to any BMW / MIN Dealers today and petrol cars new / pre reg are ready to go, or cars are on their way from which ever country, Oxford England for petrol MINI,s.
  36. Done thermostat housing and water pump less than 3 months ago, so brand new G12Evo coolant (also replaced the expansion tank with one without silikat 😎)
  37. @Graham ButcherYes, as we have been discussing. Yet another Click bait merchant that reports the press /media for us. He makes many comments and exaggerations. @Stonekeeper Just say in England if it is only England. ( and then the other countries get their percentage when applicable. ) Devolved is devolved, as those in the countries devolved might know, but BBC & SKY reporters seem not to.
  38. Do you keep saying Starmer always talks about England as if he is ignoring Scotland or is it to clarify that he cannot address Scotland on these issues because he has no say? The Scottish Government is the devolved government for Scotland and has a range of responsibilities that include: the economy, education, health, justice, rural affairs, housing, environment, equal opportunities, consumer advocacy and advice, transport and taxation.
  39. UK Government Car Parks. Not local authority cars parks, Council Car parks. Actually the peoples car parks. This week seemingly some Railways were taken back into Public Ownership. The first etc. That was the UK government and in England. Like the NHS this week, Sir Keir Starmer.MP. NHS England that was. More houses, More houses in England.
  40. Er excuse me, but yes I did, I provided a document that spelled it out, issued by the government for their own private government only city centre car parks around Westminster, back at the time when we last had this discussion.
  41. Always starts from cold. It's o ly hard to start what the engine is warm, I'm.fittung a tandum pump tomorrow, I'll keep ya posted..
  42. @xtp77 The S2 has electric power steering. So no power steering fluid. And like in any other front wheel drive car, the differential is integrated in the gearbox. So there is no separate differential fluid (unless you have a 4x4 of course). BTW: If you really don't know if your car has a differential, I highly doubt whether you should maintain the car yourself...
  43. Hi, I'm from the Czech Republic and I have the same problem as others, namely cracking during Carplay. I have SW version 8740 and HW 690. Would someone be so kind and send me version 8755 as well, please? Thank you very much Tomáš Email: [email protected]
  44. Well here in Chelmsford there are currently approaching 1,000 new flats nearing approval stage that will involve demolishing shopping areas including a mall and rebuilding a new mall with flats above and surrounding it, with other blocks of flats, all of which have zero, yes, that's right zero parking arrangements, so anyone with a car will be forced to look for alternative parking solutions. The streets around the area are all pedestrianised and then the streets around the that area are all the type which have terraced houses as you see in the photo, narrow streets, parking only on one side, the houses themselves are only fractionally wider then the length of a small SUV, so not everyone can park their car there, those that can, do so on a permit. Currently there are no EVs in that area for reasons I mentioned in an earlier post. Like it or not, you are in a very privileged position and as a result you really cannot comprehend how vast numbers of normal everyday folk have to live their lives., so how are these people supposed to cope?
  45. Carplay/Waze it is then!
  46. Been back in business since last Tuesday! Tracked up and new Pirelli tyres as well. Feels like a brand new motor! Creeping up on 97,000 miles now. Going well now. That'll do.

At 100k I'd get the clutch and slave done, they're worn out.
  48. Hi! I've successfully went from 1940 to 1985 and I'm already regretting that. I had 1940 from the factory and it was quite unproblematic. Now, a day after the update, my wireless Android Auto keeps disconnecting from the car in the places it didn't before. The update is one and only variable. I tried to hard restart the multimedia unit and the phone and nothing helps. Is there an option to safely go back to 1940/1941? Or maybe there is something else I can do with that issue?
