Breaking VW Emissions Scandal -Mk I

Featured Replies

Just think how much revenue HMRC would lose if car manufacturers provide false emissions readings. Billions could be owed due to millions of new cars sitting within "false" tax bands.

Anyway, if my tax has been cheaper I will not grumble too much...

Is it likely my VAG diesel is cheating on me, telling me it has given up smoking

I can see a lot irony here. Poor America. The biggest emission producer of the 20th century.

Ok guys, what have I missed?

Interesting topic,

I've seen test data using remote sensors to compare European test cycle data and "real driving" conditions, and the VW data doesn't stand out as being suspicious compared to other manufacturers. I'd imagine they are all at this and more will be in trouble (except for the American cars of course ha ha)

Interesting is that this data shows that recent model cars emit between 4 & 6 times more in real world testing...

Probably. It'll be affecting more than just the U.S. models. What a farce!

I think it's just the engines with Adblue and SCR systems. I wouldn't worry

Well i guess the MPG figures are lies too then

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0koda_Yeti

According to this Wiki article, it is fitted to all the TDI models from Greenline 1.6 to 170bhp versions. The ones not affected are the latest models introduced this year.

If you press CTRL and F you can search for EA189 to find the engines affected

I find it very interesting to note that not one of VW competitors have taken the huge opportunity to decry their dishonest and underhand methods to fraudulently mislead all their customers..... Can't understand that at all....

Vw have issued recall instructions. I have just read them. They are going to drill an 8MM hole into the downpipe. That should pass the emissions test at the tail pipe now.

yes, but some States like California are at least attempting to reduce emissions.

What about super car hybrid EV's that produce zero emissions for the 5-10 minutes they can run on battery power alone, and then belch out massive pollution for 99% of real world usage? Nobody with a super car will drive within battery-mode only, unless they want to pass an emissions test. Within the real-world these naughty Golf's will likely be far greener.

Emissions should be measured as an absolute maximum, rather than under simulated scenarios of part/light throttle openings.

Will he fall on his penlight like an honourable man,

and will they give him his very own tape measure as a leaving gift, & will it be a Hyundai he drives for his retirement?

(The Engineers engineer that knew the cars and the Industry inside out!)

I thought the Octavia 2.0 had the EA288 but I will check with my dealer (if no one knows)

"This video does not exist."

Only in VW's mind,

It is all a dream, and they will wake up and it will all be good.

Applies to vehicles fitted with the EA189 engine... Trying to find which models this is fitted too ;)

Seems to be  Jetta, Beetle, Audi A3 and Golf manufactured from 2009-2015 are affected, as well as the 2014-15 Passat models.

Volkswagen's diesel scandal is growing exponentially larger. In a new statement, the company admits that 11 million vehicles worldwide might be equipped with software capable of evading emissions testing. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency is beginning an investigation into the 3.0-liter V6 inAudi models and the Porsche Cayenne in the US, according to The Detroit News.

The automaker claims that from its investigation so far, the "relevant engine management software is also installed in otherVolkswagen Group vehicles with diesel engines." However, the company finds that the "noticeable deviation" in test results and real-world numbers only relates to the Type EA 189 powerplant. That still leaves 11 million vehicles potentially skirting emissions rules, though.

Governments around the world have started taking a closer look into the company, too. In the US, the EPA has begun testing VW's V6 diesel because "they were certified well before we knew what we know now," Christopher Grundler, director of the EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality, said to The Detroit News. The agency has started checking diesels from other automakers to make sure they're meeting the rules, as well. Germany, the European Union, and South Korea have instituted similar investigations.

yes, you're right EA288.

there will be a lot more to it than we are being told.

Its possible these bits of software are there so the car doesnt emit as much crap when its idling if people do the sensible thing and turn stop/start off, its possible it wasnt fitted solely to fool testers and that its just a by-product of the softwares design.

We wil never know the full story thats for sure

Anyone know whether Skodas are affected by the false emissions stats? In particular Skoda Superb Greenline III.

I have a friend in Canadia who runs a pick-up named after a national park...or the size of a national park, I forget which. Motive power is provided by a 7.2 litre Cummins diesel and he tows a full-size Airstream trailer, (caravan/ bungalow). Fuel economy is described as "The right side of double digits" and emissions as "Who cares?". I can't wait to get his comments on this.

The ICCT and Norwegians have done independant testing on Euro 6 engines.

The limit is 80g/km. Most exceeded this by 5 or 6 times, some by 10 and one 22 times the limit.

In the Norwegian test the Mazda CX5 emitted 800g/km and the Passat 450g/km.

Others in the test included Ford and Toyota.

The French Minister who is trying to Ban diesels from Paris has called for a full EU wide inquiry by the European courts.

UK Transport and Environment Group spokesman says this look to be done by many manufacturers of European diesels,

The fall out from this is going to be massive.
