Apparantly it's "Type EA 189 engines".... anyone know which engines these are?

Talked to my dealer and the engine used in VRS is named CAMA B18800, might have gotten the name a bit wrong though.

The service technician told me that though it's the same motor used in Golf GTD the engine uses a different fuel injection, ECU etc.

Only time will tell and if out cars is affected we will know soon enough.

From Volkswagen's official press release I think they said EURO6 diesels aren't affected?

If this turns out to be true Skoda will be getting my car returned under "sales of goods act" as we have been misled to what we were buying! If true love to see how they're wiggle out of this one!

I reckon this will go bigger than just VW. Given just how worse emissions were on the road, I do wonder if other manufacturers will have done the same thing to get through emission testing.

Edit: this is of course wild unfounded speculation on my part.

Applies to vehicles fitted with the EA189 engine... Trying to find which models this is fitted too ;)

Seems to be  Jetta, Beetle, Audi A3 and Golf manufactured from 2009-2015 are affected, as well as the 2014-15 Passat models.

"What if something similar has been happening in Europe, where diesels have sold in far bigger numbers? It’s unlikely because NOx emissions standards are more lax (though they’ve got much tighter with Euro 6). But no doubt the reputational damage will ripple in this direction."  Top Gear Blog

Given an article I saw said the cars were putting out 40x as much NOx as they should be and the EU limits are nowhere near that much worse than the US ones, I can't help but think they must be cheating in Europe too.

As said VW themselves are today saying it's 11m GLOBALLY.

Alright, calm down, no need to shout; I'm just quoting what was stated on WATO on R4...

I also see quite a massive amount of hipocracy in these threads. So many people angry about VW cheating on diesel emission tests who are quite happy to rip out their DPFs and cheat their way through MOTs by sticking in an empty one,

Well - I'm outraged - and I have not done, nor would I do, that!  And I imagine you don't have a clue who of those who are angry has ripped out a DPF!  There is a line - and VW are so far the other side of it on this issue it's out of sight (and I'm no environmentalist either)

Do we really need 7 different threads running about the same issue?

BMW was also tested, a x5. And that car had lower or same emissions on the road compared to the test cycle.

I'm fairly sure that none of the American brands will be found to use this type of technology!! (cynical me?)

I'm not accusing you personally, nor everyone in general. There are a few though, who I expect know who they are :)

Apparently so :)

I wonder if the long term consequence of this farce will be even bigger than the fines and recall costs to VW. The Americans were only just starting to warm to the idea of small European Diesels in their passenger cars and this no doubt will sent the whole shebang back to the Stone Age. The repercussions for all the major manufactures (not just VW) will be massive. If any other major players are found to be cheats, then it will be a staggering blow for passenger diesels in the USA, one that they may never truly recover from.

I wonder/worry that if a firm as big as VW had to operate illegal engine systems to be able to pass their cars through certain emissions standards, then how would other companies manage. Are we about to see the walls come down and not only VW, but Mercedes, BMW Toyota etc all be found to be operating illegally?

That article says that VW were the only company selling diesels without AdBlue in the US.

Is that actually correct?

The trouble is that the Nox at 31 mg has been found to be up to 40 times higher than declared in the USA!!!

Now  VW has said about 11 million cars world wide, I think they have scored an own goal?

They (VW) say no cars are involved in the EU, if you believe that........   As Many Rice said they would would't they - allegedly

News item on radio just now - 20% wiped off VW share price.

Item also expects other manufacturers to be on the naughty step inside days.

Dont they still use leaf springs for suspension :D

All EU cars are built to the lab test and everyone knows it. Vx even had a disclaimer in their adverts at one point, and there were the urban legends of Fiat forcing customers to sign a disclaimer over the fuel efficiency of the Twin-air engine.

Seems like the US case is different to just building a car to the lab test.

I find this whole issue around the VW engines, given the record of the USA around refusing to agree to global warming gas reductions, and flat denial that global warming exists is completely hypocritcal.  Coming from USA  this is more about money that a genuine concern for people and the environment.

Am not really cynical :D

It is not like they ALL dont fudge figures to sell cars, if anyone believes that there is a whiter than white motor manufacturer that tells the complete truth about their range of cars, then they seriously need to compare thr colour of the sky they live in to the rest of the world. ;)

I can't see how my Yeti won't eventually be subject to an offer of a refund if they can't satisfy my power/torque requirements as advertised.

This is not going to be a simple fix issue me thinks.

In Australia they might be offered an amnesty for those sold.......cheap n nasty!

calm down, it's not as though the government stuck their private parts into a dead animal is it?  Oh wait.....

Sadly VW's involvement in this is more than a malicious third hand rumour spread by a spoiled rich brat who didn't get a job he wanted!

adblue  egr's or set fire to a bag of soot,   choose your poison---surely miles traveled / fuel used is all that matters and if you don't like it travel less,    this probably has a long way to with the holier than thou and "not made here" brigade
