  1. Hi @ColinD The way I see it, the size of the car is irrelevant. The relevant question is, do you need two cars in the household? If the answer is yes (and I suspect it is), the solution here is to keep the car. As you've said, it is a good car in great condition (with some minor and normal wear and tear work in need of doing, so not an issue). Given the money already invested in the car, which you won't recover selling it, you are better off keeping it if there's a need for two vehicles in the house. Replacing with a "smaller" car is unlikely to deliver any meaningful insurance or fuel savings, and you will be less happy driving it. The current generation Fabia is very impressive (arguably the best - and biggest - iteration yet), but it's a small car and rides/handles like one. Fix the Superb, keep it, bask in the warm glow of happiness that comes from driving a car you like being in.
  2. Another years MOT. Usual suspects fixed before hand. Drop links again! plus new rear discs and pads again! and treated it to a couple of new tyres as they were getting pretty thin. Put it in expecting another list of probs but No advisorys at all. Not bad for a 13 year old car with 113k. Alasdair

  4. @Colin170CR I completely get your mobility point. Three years ago I got rid of my Rapid Spaceback (mine was one of the very first ones to arrive in the UK) after 9 years of good motoring for two primary reasons - 1) it had the most uncomfortable seats outside of a church pew and 2) getting in and out was a bit awkward as it was even lower than the Superb (by design, I didn’t lower it or anything). Had it not been for the seats, I would have continued to live with the slightly awkward getting in and out for a while longer. I replaced it with a brand new mk2 MG ZS SUV (1L petrol automatic, top spec). Getting in and out was much easier due to the higher riding position. But that was its USP. The boot was 30L smaller than the Spaceback, the interior electronics were riddled with software bugs that MG never bothered to issue fixes for, the engine was unrefined and drank petrol - 36mpg in the real world and while the seats were a huge improvement over the Spaceback, they were not designed for the ample British backside. I may as well have been driving a fridge freezer. It was a capable but forgettable consumer good. So after two years I pxed it for the Superb. Best car purchase since my Rover 75 back in the mid 2000s. Yes. Getting in is a bit awkward due to being lower down (getting out is fine though), but that is the only compromise and one worth making for the rest of the car.
  5. Fitted the new axle yesterday and all seems fine. I could not find any difference between the one I removed and the replacement. The one I removed was scary rusty and in far worse shape than I thought. Thanks again. If I can find a way to upload photos I will share the horror.
  6. As you can see in the chart below, the ETRTO approved rim widths for a 235/40 tyre size are 8" to 9.5". As ETRTO approves the same rim widths for the wider and lower profile 245/35 tyre size fitting a 235/40 to a 7.5" rim might not seem extreme. Some Octavia MK3 owners have changed their 225/35R19 tyres to 235/35R19 tyres on the standard 7.5Jx19 rims...and most seem happy with the change. 225/45R17 fitted to 7" rims would give slightly more protection from kerbing damage than 235/40R18 fitted to 7.5" rims. For much better protection from kerbing damage than even 225/45R17 fitted to 7" rims, perhaps consider 17" Octavia MK3 Scout wheels, ie. 225/50R17 fitted to 7" rims. However, this would raise the gearing by 3.1% compared to 225/40R18 tyres. ETRTO approved rim widths for passenger car tyres 235/40 8.0-8.5-9.5 235/35 8.0-8.5-9.5 245/35 8.0-8.5-9.5 Amount tyre sidewalls bulge out each side (ie. amount of protection from kerbing damage) 225/40R18 fitted to 7.5" rim 4.75mm 235/40R18 fitted to 7.5" rim 7.25mm 225/45R17 fitted to 7" rim 8.6mm 205/55R16 fitted to 6.5" rim 12.45mm 225/50R17 fitted to 7" rim 15.6mm
  7. On pre 2024 cars the app access was free for the first 12 months, later cars I think it’s free for 3 years. After that you pay annually for subscriptions. There are two services: Care Connect which links to the driving data and gives you remote access to the status of the car including its current location., Infotainment Online which provides map updates, traffic, route calculation etc. I pay for both. When I just checked in the App it says you can try the services free for 3 months.

It's likely because it's streaming the media directly from the USB stick rather than copying it into memory then playing it like your conventional Windows PC would do, nothing wrong with that specifically. It'll just be the USB stick itself being poorly designed. It'll likely get hot but not hot enough to cause any damage, it'll be fine.
  9. There has been a lot of issues between Intelligent Octopus and OHME chargers reported recently. I've seen this in the VW and Skoda FB groups and EV forums. Not sure what's going on. Often these sort of issues are caused by people over complicating the IOG charging process by setting schedules in the charger and car or having both charger and car defined as devices to Octopus. With IOG you should only have one device defined and no schedules set up - then let IOG schedule your charging. My Wallbox Pulsar charger is my defined IOG device and it runs almost perfectly. I've had one issue of the charge not starting.
  10. Another slightly left field option.. . Go small and light with go kart handling... I know I'm probably biased but the previous gen Swifts are great fun in a small package and ours compliments our Kodiaq really well.
  11. I’m pretty sure that if your air bag fitted car, be it petrol, diesel, ev or hydrogen was involved in an accident which deployed the airbags then the airbag control module would have recorded the speed, pedal and steering wheel inputs plus various other parameters depending on how advanced it is. The Macmaster guy is sad spinning everything against EVs all cars are going or have already gone that way.
  12. Actually, ignore that. I worked out you needed to set home as a saved charging location first and then it all appeared.

Hi everyone! Aussie here with a wonderful 2014 Octavia VRS, my very first car that I love perhaps more than I love myself. Had it for a few months now and this forum has been super valuable to accrue knowledge and assuage worries (bushing noises...) I'm on uni break now, so I can finally start driving places other than just work, and get some much needed maintenance work done! Would love to see some photos of your own wonderful cars, and hear about any maintenance/mods you feel improved them!
  16. Thanks. I had no idea where they were until now lol. I will have to make sure I get one with the smaller box then. Most I have seen don't come with that so thanks for pointing that out
  17. Channel 5 at 8pm, Channel 5 +1 at 9pm)... Electric cars. How safe are they? EDIT, Hey hoe, they say there are less building fires or industries where there were Fire stations in the past. More wild fires in the countryside. No mention of potential BEV fires.
  18. The Gemini rims do protrude quite a bit past the sidewalls of the tyres, even with tyres with supposed rim protection. Unfortunately you just have to live with it and drive very carefully or change your rims for ones that don't stick out so much.
  19. One thing I find it useful for is I can sit in from of my computer with a large screen, use Google Maps and then when I have worked out where I am going, enter it on the My Skoda App in comfort and then transfer it to the car when I am ready to go. Very much faster than f'ing about trying to do a route on the sat nave with a car full of people saying why aren't we are moving yet? The other thing is the traffic info on the maps updates quite fast (every few minutes?) and can recalculate routs on the fly then ask if I want the new route or not. The Driving data, speeds distances, fuel use, MPG etc is fun if you are a nerd/engineer/car nut or a bloke. The ability to lock is not something I have needed yet, but it is useful. The tracking is also good. However, it will also let you flash the lights and toot the horn. Again, after trying it once just to see I have not used them, but I can see many scenarios where they could be useful. Costs... they run discounts to entice you to sigh up/renew so have a look at renewal a few times but don't do it and see if you get a discount.
  20. @thomasaspin might be able to help advice & with what is the most up to date parts.. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/466202-cave-14-twincharger-piston-help
  21. Amundsen & Columbus are not brands, they are different models of the infotainment system. If the in-built sat nav needs an SD card inserted to work then you have an Amundsen, if the glovebox unit has a CD/DVD drive and the maps are stored internally on a hard drive then you have a Columbus.
  22. I dont pay 78. I pay only 1,5 euro for one-click-app. Work in my octavia 4 and Tiguan 2017
  23. The only cheap way that work for me is open vctool, connect car - click one-click-aplications. then found 5F - MIB3 audio parameters. on this they are about 20 different datasets. I dont know what they do, but I chose one out of twenty based on what I liked the most. They can't be adjusted, but my rear speakers have finally started working properly. This think cost 1 VCtool coin - 1,5 euro for one car
  24. Hi, I`m solving the same problem with octavia 4 2023, i use VCTool, they have one-click apps with almost 25 different audio datasets for mib3 units. It cost 1,5 euro for one car and you can try more datasets. Its more powerfull then stock. I use dataset 14. You can try it, its cheap. I use VAS 6154A cable, but they wrote that you can use ELM327. But i still want to use alex editor, but i cant take out current dataset.. On site mibsolution . one is some datasets for mib3, maybe i take some dataset from this site, modify, and upload to my vehicle. Does anybody try to buy subscription for editor, if its works? Does anybody have any idea how to get current dataset from mib3 unit? carscanner wrote no compatible for this function. I have icar pro 2S. I dont want to pay expensive VCTool. I dont know if its posible to get by ODIS-E.
  25. Not easy at all. Look at the image above of the refurbished, super-clean head and consider those views but with everything deep inside the port completely black and light-absorbing. Couldn't even see much at all with a device for looking inside the ear canal which my partner kindly offered. 😄 Access on a 16 valve engine (forward facing intake ports?) looks vastly easier for those lucky owners. Even with mirror, light, help I couldn't see into the ports to really tell how much crud there is, let alone do anything about it. At one point I had my head wedged upside down between engine and firewall, but still couldn't see well. I've decided it's OK! 😆 In better news, the PCV system seems to be working properly now, pulling the oil filler cap down again at idle, if you loosen and try to remove.
  26. Maquina de Ozono y limpieza con amoniaco y jabón
  27. The air distribution system is common to many VAG vehicles. I’m not 100% certain but I think the flaps are moved electrically either motors or relays. If they are then it could be a fuse.
  28. There are some areas which seem to be doing OK. Car production may still have a future. Nissan in Sunderland, JLR now we gave a US trade deal and we are getting closer to the EU. We have our film industry and the sports side seems to do well. Aerospace and Defence might do well but that is mainly UK taxpayer money and equipment for ourselves. Current weakness in the US dollar means imports are cheaper than last year. Life is getting harder for Western economies as the Far East and India power ahead.
  29. Is the drop in industry due to the UK failing to keep much of it ? We do have a lot of warehouses I can attest to. I suppose that can loosely be described as industry. A nation of shop keeper and bankers.
  30. problem solved. I was controlling the volume button from the steering wheel 👍
  31. Check the buttons, especially right side...
  32. No you should keep the spare tyre, it's not adding much weight as VWs are lardy anyway. The electric pumps you get with the car are to me very annoying, weak and very noisy clatter. If you want a compressor type inflator, especially if you have the large wheels and tyres fitted to modern cars and they are flat, this has been recommended, VIAIR 84p Portable Air Compressor Kit.
  33. I have found the photo of Average fuel consumption, it's almost identical to Total so the calibration is OK. @Thefeliciahacker The coolant performs betetr over 100 'C? How?
  34. E Manufacturers like VW Group were saying (trying it on) Warranties were invalidated by doing too many 'Launch Controls' as they knew you had from the ECU. & BMW saying the same about Track use of their Ultimate Driving Machines. Issue right there was they sell Media cars, or Ex Media cars through Dealership Networks and even with Approved Used Warranties. Cars that were at Launch Events on Tracks or Roads or Offroad courses. This was at the time of Turbo failures & gearbox issues and diff issues of some VW Group performance vehicles. & high oil use, Audi RS3,s. The media teams had to go warn up PRESS cars before influencers took cars out and ragged them. There was no warnings or anything in brochures or owners manuals that when you bought or borrowed or just drove a performance ICE vehicle that 'Launch Control' use should be rationed. ................ If you watch various Police Accident type programmes they know when a bulb was on or off at the time of accidents / incidents, when the brakes were or were not applied before a collisions, air bags deployed etc, Enjoying 'English roads' ! When brains were being handed out they were off that day.
  35. Bit late, but you can also get a car pro rayon pad which will make life a lot easier if you need to go over the screen again. A polisher is the way to go to make life simpler, but they are not cheap for a decent one. Could you maybe borrow one from a friend if you purchased your own pad for it maybe? I use this type of pad along with the ceri glass to clean windscreens from fallout and grease etc a few times a year, and it will happily remove wiper marks from the screen as well. Just tape of the trim around the glass to avoid it damaging the plastic and don’t go anywhere near paint with it.
  36. Servicing dealer contacted me today, said they have now confirmed it was a split seal causing the AC refrigerant to leak out, i.e. clearly a manufacturing issue on a car that is now 10 days into its first life They are now in receipt of the relevant spare parts, and will be replacing them asap. Headed off on holiday tomorrow, but expecting to collect the car when we land back then hopefully this chapter can be closed
  37. Idea from left field. Strip it as a track car. Lose the air con, lose all interior aside from a single bucket, sell those parts off to recoup dosh and add lightness. Will still be big but get it lighter than a Fabia.

Been back along to the garage tonight so they could run diagnostics again. They said they usually just repair the AKF pipework on 1.0l models, as per the main dealer guidance they receive, and that resolves the fault. The main dealer guidance for the 1.5l model is to replace both parts together so they reckon this will solve the issue with mine but said its unusual on 1.0l models, apparently. They are still charging for labour but after checking the cost it will be £140 in total for the charcoal canister replacement and they said they will take it on a longer test drive afterwards and run diagnostics again to check its resolved the issue. I have booked it in for next Friday so will update as to whether this has resolved the issue. Out of interest I got a quote from the main dealer and the cost to replace both parts is £428.16, not including diagnostics. So far the VAG specialist is £350 including diagnostics.
  40. Colin if you keep it go and see these guys I'm now using them instead of MD ... German Car Specialists | Servicing, Diagnostics & Repairs in Sheffield | Autotecnic Done a few jobs for me now and have been 'Superb' !
  41. Those Fabias come with a 1.5 TSI 150bh now don't they? MK1 Fabia vRS power range but I don't think they will have the same torque punch. Not test driven one yet but they're on my radar. That or a Skala.
  42. Recently a fella was convicted of a murder on Anglesey in part due to the telematics of his car placing it at the scene. It was found burnt out on the night in question, but the crucial data had been uploaded already. It was a diesel LR product. This has nothing to do with EVs....
  43. Yes, all appears to be good, icy cold again and the strange noises I heard have apparently gone as well, so all is good again. One thing he did point out to me is that he thought I had diesel knock and suggested that either get some or do it myself is to re torque the injectors as the copper washer does normally require a slight pinching up after a while as it compresses down. he thinks that should cure my slight diesel knock.
  44. Vehicle data privacy is notoriously bad. This has nothing about EV's, unless you are gullible enough to believe a social media "influencer". The poor data privacy had been talked about years ago: Mozilla FoundationCars are a Privacy Nightmare: Here’s Why That MattersModern cars are surveillance-machines on wheels that can detect everything we do and where and when we do it. What could happen if something goes wrong? (I suppose 2023 didn't line up with the "influencer"'s publishing schedule. Now is a bit of a dry spell for him)

If you have the Canton upgrade you cannot get the variable floor as the subwoofer sits in the spare tyre, and if you have the spare tyre you cannot have the variable boot floor.
  46. You need to keep the circumference the same, so to increase the profile you’d need to decrease the wheel size. Tyres make a big difference, although maybe not to the extent you need. Most of these cars are developed and come with Bridgestone, however there’s a reason you see them with Conti or Michelin.
  47. First remove the panel on the side of the dash, then there's a little hole about 3-4 inch from the bottom where you can poke a screwdriver through the lift the damper off of the catch. Then tug the glovebox upwards and outwards at the same time quite firmly and it'll pop off of the hinges.
  48. It is a bit disappointing that Haynes don't make a paper/book version....I wanted to remove rear bumper as little bit of rust round by filler cap starting (common fault) I have a 13 plate.....and absolutely nothing about in Haynes auto fix.....nor seat removal,,door card removal etc....as want to change front speakers....and give inside a full wet vac when weather is better.....get most of tips and advice thru YouTube..and this site....which I've just joined...Great little Skoda community here 👍👌🤗
  49. i tried everywhere to get a haynes manual...in book form .....but they dont make them so i bought thier digital autofix for my citigo....what a waste of time this was.....very limited information....not worth £27 ...so phoned up explaining its not really as good as a proper book/manual and got a prompt refund thankfully.
