Some of you points are correct, some maybe correct and some irrelevant.

Regarding the last point on functional safety, I don't give a monkeys. If I repair it and put it back in and it works, who cares?

What a Hero!

Hello guys, short update regarding the gear selector problem.I just had mine done today under warranty and they replaced the next components: gear selector mecanism, gear selector washer for cable, gear selector cable clip at gear box end. So after i drive away from the garage couple miles i can feel that the car change the gears more smoothly and before i had a clicking noise under the car that i could hear only when i had the window open.. and i used to hear it pretty often buy now is gone and i think it had something to do with the gear selector problem... but i'm not sure. Now i will wait to see if the error is gone as it should be.

Any change in gearbox characteristics will be down to a reset of the box and/or upgrade of the software.

Hello all

I'm a long time lurker here and this topic took my interest as I have just been told by West End Skoda in Edinburgh today that they want £1k+ to replace this unit to correct what was an split second flash on the instrument display of an error. It came up and went away so fast each time that I couldn't make out the message by the time I looked down at the message.

I had the car serviced back May this year and its only come up since then, it was very rare at the start so I didn't think much of it since I've had the same issue with a door sensor flashing up and the dealership said they couldn't see anything in the logs about that. The car was 4 years old in May (2015 Octavia TDI VRS DSG) so having to pay out that amount of money on a repair already is a bit grating on my nerves considering the service costs in year 4 and 5 for a model and options. Is it possible that Skoda UK would be willing to help with the cost since this seems to be a known issue?

Any advice would be great please.

Cheers

I got the message again today for the first time in a few weeks. I just look on it as my friend now.

I did find out by accident though that if I hold down the button on the fob it opens and closes the windows depending on what action you are doing. It took me 3.5 years to work that out by accident lol!

Update

I told the support rep at the garage that I wont be taking it ahead without speaking to Skoda UK after researching this part issue and the fact that its a common fault and a load of people have had this issue in the VAG group with DSG boxes, I just said that I think its unreasonable to already have £1k+ repair bill for a faulty part for a car that's just over 4 years old.

30 minutes later I got a call back from the dealership, they contacted Skoda UK on my behalf and they have offered to pay for 100% of the parts leaving me with the labour bill of £380. While it still stings a bit I'm happy to take this forward now at least, I'm very thankful though to the dealership service rep though for doing that for me so West End Skoda get a thumbs up from me on this!

Glad I held off on playing for it out right now.

That was my dealer until I decided VAG cars are mostly crap these days, so switched to a Hyundai Ioniq with 5 year warranty as standard.

West End Skoda were always great to deal with, especially when they were based in Uphall. not so much after the move to Edinburgh.

I had several paperwork errors about service and MOT, and after an aircon service, found the blanking caps for the aircon rattling around on the scuttle panel.

All you can do is point them to this thread to show the number of cars having this problem. IMHO the part is not fit use and several people have had the part replaced out of warranty.

Allegedly a revised part is due out in late 2019, some people have had a new unit fail within a month of being replaced.

Well a better outcome so well done for sticking to your guns. However, you have proven that VAG know of the issue, and I wouldn't be paying for the labour either.

100% agree.

You could say, “I appreciate the offer so far but I’m not prepared to pay for the labour either - it’s a very well-known issue” !!

Push them for every penny.

Glad you got the best result possible.

Just a shame you had to have a long and hard battle with the dealer. The words battle and luck do not feature in the sale of goods act.

  • 3 months later...

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who's posted info on this thread about this problem.

My son got a second hand 4 yr old  MK7 dsg Golf 15 months ago with a VW used car warranty.  He started getting this error message briefly flashing up on the console about 3 months after buying the car, took it to the dealer who looked at the car, said nothing was wrong & car was fine.

Error still kept flashing up every now and then, but as he’d been told it was ok, he wasn’t worried.

Couple of months ago error kept coming up repeatedly - when starting the car, when driving, when driving on motorways 😳 . Fortunately it stayed on the console long enough for him to get a photo.

He booked it into the dealers and was given the lovely surprise that there was a fault and it would cost over £1000 to fix - new gearbox selector mechanism.
Armed with the info on this thread with regard to it being a known VAG fault, other people had got a goodwill fix from VW, it being a health & safety issue (happening while driving on motorways) and that he'd taken the car in 12mths before with this fault,  he asked for a goodwill payment.

Next day dealer came back saying VW would pay 70% of parts & labour and dealer would pay remaining 30% -  happy days!

So thank you again for those who’ve taken the trouble to share info on this site. It just shows the power of the Net 😊👍🏻

Good result there. Just make sure you check that they re connect the parking pawl. I found out on mine recently, following the repair, that the car no longer held stationary or locked when put into park mode. The dealer forgot to connect the parking gear cable and the car would roll off down a hill without the hand break on.

Same here. Nearly got killed by my own car when it started rolling back!!

This error has been coming up on my 2014 (64) Octavia VRS. I finally got my local VWAG specialist to look at it when it was in for a service and they've confirmed it's the gearbox selector mechanism.

Then I found this thread which is a very useful find :)

As my local garage has quoted £500+ to fix the issue, has anyone actually left it/risked it and had any actual issues beyond the error popping up? Just trying to calculate the risk/cost of not doing anything. I understand it could get stuck in park, but they haven't actually seen this happen.

As my car is 5 years old and hasn't been serviced by Skoda themselves, I think it'll be a long shot to get anything out of them. I'll still give it a go though.

(FYI - I'm still waiting for a call back from Marshall Reading to speak to them. Two phone calls and an online enquiry obviously aren't actually enough to get to speak to them...)

From all I've read, it just gets worse and worse until you have no choice but to fix it, if you haven't got rid of the car by then. But I also gather that whilst it is in error, you can't lock the car up either. So there's a slight security issue to bear in mind too. But I'm not sure many people have left it to see what actually happens in the end.

FWIW, I did ask for my old selector mechanism when I had mine done. I was planning on taking it apart and seeing what the problem actually was and seeing if there was a simple DIY fix. But Skoda wouldn't give it to me, they said it had to go back to HQ to be examined. It would be nice if someone could get hold one one and see if they could get to the bottom of it and try and self-service it.

Mine has been flagging this up for a couple of months now, I've called Marshalls in Kidlington and booked it in.

I bought mine used and have an extended warranty on it, I'm really not looking forward if they say it's going to cost £xx to fix it....

I would be interested to see what Marshalls say.🙂

Yes indeed!  My first service was carried out at Grey Gables garage in Curbridge which is closer to me.  They are a Skoda franchise selling mainly second hand and occasionally new Skodas.  They were considerably cheaper than the main dealer, and very good.

Thanks Nick. I'll continue to weigh it up. I suspect I'll get it done and try Skoda for some 'contribution'. I haven't planned to change the car for a while and for the sake of £500, it seems extreme to.

Just bad timing with new pads and discs done recently, cam belt and tyres due imminently... it might be a quiet Christmas 😞

I'll update with any success from Skoda

My brand new Fabia presented this message the day after I bought it in December 2018. After several instances of it occurring, the gear selector was replaced in May 2019. The message reappeared in September 2019. Diagnostics showed the same error code as pre replacement. I am currently waiting for Skoda's response. It would seem that a 'successful' fix should only be judged if still fault free after 1 year or so and not before then?

I don't see how there can be a properly successful fix that you can rely on while they are just replacing a defective part with another that has the same potential for failure. Some time ago there was talk on here of a revised part coming out around the end of this year, but as far as I know there is no further news of it.
