I wasn't focusing on peak power. I was focusing on the shape of the torque curve, particularly around 2,000rpm.

When some respected Germany tuning companies only manage to get 125HP to 130HP, you really need to ask yourself whether tuning companies claiming much higher figures of 140HP to 145HP are really telling the truth. If they really are getting that amount of power, then another question pops up. How are they doing it? For example, are they running the engines on a lean mix of petrol/air which could melt the pistons and spark plugs and possibly cause valve damage...or at the very least have a very negative effect on engine life?

The German tuning firm DigiTec are claiming 125HP and 235Nm of torque at a low 1,750rpm for a remapped VW Up! 90HP Turbo.

APR claim similar figures to JBS depending on fuel so it's definitely possible to achieve them.

I see what you are saying though, max torque is usually delivered around 2000rpm.

I've had a remap from them before on a cupra diesel a long time ago. At a later date I had the car on a Dyno not far from me and the figures were slightly less but not by much, you're never gonna get the same figures every time, they just print out the highest ones.

I've built a small 8" subwoofer for my Fabia It's designed to fit snugly in the "basket" in the trunk and have a quick connection so it's easy to remove if needed.  If someone wants to see

Also, where is the actual graph from this remap?

Here is the link for the APR remap.

http://www.goapr.co.uk/products/ecu_upgrade_10tsi.html

As you can see it shows peak torque of 186 at around 2750rpm, with 140bhp.

If you drive in top gear between about 1,600rpm and 2,000rpm these torque curves are really bad. If your gearing is 25mph/1,000rpm then that equates to between 40mph and 50mph. In this example, you won't start to get really good performance when pulling a 25mph/1,000rpm top gear until about 60mph, ie. 2,400rpm. The VW Up! 90HP once remapped to 125HP and 235Nm at 1,750rpm would give really good top gear acceleration if pulling 25mph/1,000rpm top gear. For a car not to pull strongly in top gear until it's going at least 60mph just isn't nice to use in day to day situations.

That website doesn't show graphs. Maybe you could email them and see if they could send you one. DigiTec seems to claim peak torque from surprisingly low revs, so it would be interesting to see their torque curves.

Yes it would be interesting to see.

The car drives great, much better than stock so let's just agree to disagree on that.

If your car pulls well in top gear from 1,800rpm to 2,200rpm then that would match what your graph shows. ie. having fantastic torque low down in the rev range at around 2,000rpm.

Agreed that around 1,600rpm wouldn't be great for an in-gear pull but from what I'm aware the turbo spools* around 1.7-1.8k rpm in these cars anyway (given the 'flat spots') having been mentioned etc.

I'd be mindful about hard acceleration at low revs/high gear anyway as the clutch isn't rated all that high, but that's just me. :)

I'm enjoying this discussion! Really looking forward to the in-gear pulls @steslatt - no doubt the extra oomph makes cruising a bit easier, too!

*probably not the right terminology, but the quoted peak torque from Skoda is around 1,800 rpm in the 95ps and 2,000 rpm in the 110ps from memory.

Exactly, I want some life out of the gearbox/clutch. 😂

Who drives like that anyway? If you're crusing under 2000rpm, you would always drop down a gear to accelerate quickly.

I've seen the same quote but it said "from" 2000rpm.

There's definitely some inclination to drive like that in a diesel car... but then they idle at lower revs, they're more torquey by design and can withstand that sort of abuse better!

Agreed! I'll always drop down to get the most out of the rev range for overtaking.

Yeah, diesel cars are a totally different animal with less max rpm to begin with.

Hi everyone, apprehensive to write this as I don't want to offend any of you but I'm thinking of changing from Skoda to something else. Nothing else other than that I feel that this (almost 3 years after purchase) is the best time to get the value out of selling the car.

I'm currently infatuated by the Audi TT and BMW Series 4 Coupe, for some reason I love that shape of car. I guess It's because I'm young and want to experience something like the aforementioned cars. Just wanted to hear your thoughts on this decision, I always like hearing what others have to say in case there is something I'm missing behind the rose-tinted glasses.

The Audi TT I'm looking at is a 2013 1.8 S-Line model with 40k miles and I'm going to book a test drive as a co-worker said they aren't nice driving to my surprise.

Apologies if this isn't the place to speak about this, I just feel kinda sentimental about my little Skoda.

@Lemto

Speaking as a car/driving enthusiast who has had the chance of working in the motor trade and drive literally thousands of cars I would say that while yes it is true you do bond with the cars you own however don't let that or other peoples comments stop you from trying something else.

People look for different things when driving cars so what perhaps your co-worker describes as "not nice to drive" could in fact be a great driving experience when you try it for yourself.

I definitely encourage people to try different cars - sometimes you are pleasantly surprised!

Good luck

I appreciate that insight a lot @Fab1493, it is the early stages yet as I don't want to jump into anything but I'm really considering it! Thanks again, really glad I found this forum. Mostly everyone is helpful and there's a sense of comradery, I'll miss that if I do decide on changing cars.

Seen that mate, it's probably been sitting at the dealership for some time. They're affiliated with the people I bought my Skoda from so I don't think they'd sell it if it wasn't 100%, especially without mentioning any issues.

Didn't think you would be allowed to test drive a car with no MOT?

I agree, the guy said I could come up and take it out for a spin so I don't know lol. Maybe he's unaware it's out of MOT?

How's it going a couple weeks in? 😛

I actually had to take it back, there was an issue with it cutting boost occasionally under certain circumstances. Turned out it was pinking slightly and the ECU was cutting the boost. He adjusted the ignition timing and its been fine since. Not been out in it much as the Mrs has just got a new car and it's been a nightmare with stuff going wrong on it so I've been trying to sort that out.

@steslatt

What are you using 95 unleaded or Super Unleaded?

97 Super

Have you tried 99 ron?   Was the remap figures for improved power not based on 98 ron that is not available in the UK?

No, they specifically asked what fuel I would be using and based it on that.
