  1. First maybe tell what engine, gearbox and age of a vRS Estate. Is it a TDI? Is it a manual or DSG. Test everything on a road test of over 20 miles. AC etc, Cruise Control, acceleration etc. Handling, brakes. Service History, not just Minor & Major Servicing. Fixed or Variable, Pollen filter, Air Filter, brake fluid changes, anything more than just Oil & Inspection Services? What tyres are on, are the brakes looking good, is the windscreen looking good, is the spare wheel in the spare tyre well, the kit, the locking wheel nut socket.
  2. Spent some time on the justy this evening but still made some progress. Cleaned the bay down, which It desperately needed. Blew out all the crevices (which made a mess) Then primed some dodgy areas with rubbed through paint And used a spray can of cayenne metallic to spray it in. If you don't look too hard it looks all the same colour and it should prevent any rust from forming. Be hidden behind wiring and piping soon enough so just needed to be presentable. As much as I want to do some huge strip down and respray of the bay, and make everything look better than new. I'd end up chasing my tail and it'd sit for another 5 years. Have the engine loom in place now too. Small steps
  3. Don't worry it's off the pit now and hopefully won't need to go back on for a long long time. I ran some petrol in and around the tank, shook the life of it and drained it out. Turned a shade yellow but compared to before, I don't think I'll have any trouble for another while yet. Also note the fuel pump/filter dragging still. New filter is slightly different to the old one so it's gonna take a bit of fettling to put in. Done enough on it this evening to be happy.
  4. Fuel tanks back in and plumbed up All I'm waiting on now is a gasket for the carb. So close and yet so far Wouldn't mind but I did order gaskets and waited a month for them, only for them to arrive ripped. From a different seller mind as the seller I bought the first kit from is out of stock.
  5. Morning all, Well after lurking on here since 2010 as well as seatcupra.net, bouncing between Leon, Ibiza and Arona ownership I finally own the right badge to post! Some of you may have seen me around on forums or shows, my yellow MK4 Ibiza was at quite a few! Just picked up this 2014 Octavia VRS with the black pack, Canton audio etc Looking forward to some fettling, improving and getting the car up to my OCD standard! Got a bit of a damp boot at the moment, but I think this is the poor design issue rather than light seals or a split washer pipe! If you see me around Staffs/Cheshire, give me a wave! Jimski
  6. Everybody wants a prize 🙄🤣 I had a ten year hiatus on ClubGTI, between my Mk2 and Mk7.5 GTI's. Don't drag me into your competitive absences - my non-existent Swiss heritage means I must remain impartial 😇 G
  7. I can raise 0 posts in 12 years, so I win top trumps I think, what does our adjudicator @Gaz think?
  8. Haha, surely that wins a prize?! Hopefully a few more now I've got the Octavia!
  9. As a general guideline, I would advise to use manual coding and adaption rather that built in OCAs, since the last ones will not leave a trace if something goes wrong. Please see related threads for more details: https://forum.obdeleven.com/thread/16159/adaptation-invalid?page=1&scrollTo=76547 https://forum.obdeleven.com/thread/17388/invalid-adaption?page=1&scrollTo=76545
  10. If fuel filter was recently changed, check the area for leaks. You'd probably have smelt any such problem though. Do this inspection without a lit cigarette. 🙂
  11. Brilliant will pick some up now, the service was done by a family mechanic, he passes back all the old materials so I know fuel/oil/air filter, oil and coolant was done but sparkplugs were left. Will post update
  12. Thanks guys. Sorry should have said, looking at a few really around 14/15 plate mileage varies from 60-90k on them. Manual diesels. Drove one yesterday and realised when back barely checked anything, hard to concentrate when a salesman sat yapping your ear! Although error messages came up so that's already got me worried!!
  13. It will be for stashing whatever your choice of illicit stuff will be! I saw the cover plate on mine & think I removed it to find............. well nothing 🙄 Its a lost volume which could be useable, I would be interested in the price of the tray and whether the original blanking plate would cover it.
  14. I probably speak for a fair few on here but the image of Mk1 Fabia's especially the vRS's isn't great at the moment. Almost a default cheap chav wagon round here. I'm looking forward to when they've got through this stage and there's only the nice ones left - look at the Citroen Saxo VTR/VTS - everywhere then gone over night. The only ones I see round here are either owned from new (old man spec and mint) or ragged to death covered in soot.
  15. Turbo can get really hot, so it's not surprising that they rapidly show signs of rusting/corrosion. An example:
  16. I used the new bank of chargers at Washington South services on the A1 yesterday. 6x350kW chargers that worked nicely. One was in use when we got there, by the time we had a comfort break there were 5 in use. Six chargers per services is probably a minimum now. for those interested I got 75kW with a cold battery and 25% SoC. Not lightening fast, but good enough.
  17. It is a cast iron part that goes through extreme heat cycles. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that - and the term rust generally implies penetrative corrosion - this is surface oxidization which is perfectly normal for cast iron and is not a defect or an issue. Replacing an entire turbo and it would look the exact same after a few months. And going down the legal route before even speaking to them nicely is just terrible practice and rude - that would be if there was an issue (which this isnt)
  18. I picked up my new Octavia VRS TSI 5 months ago. As I'm something of an audiophile, I opted for the Canton upgrade but I've always found it slightly disappointing. It is not a bad system so to speak, I would even go as far as to say that it sounds "quite good". But the sound was certainly not as weighty as I'd hoped, even with the subwoofer maxed out. And with the volume up high, the amplitude of the bass frequencies seemed to be reduced (perhaps to protect the speakers and reduce the number of warranty claims?) So I decided to invest in an after market upgrade with the aim of a louder, clearer, weightier sound. On my previous car, a 2007 Honda Civic, a friend helped me to carry out a custom upgrade and whilst it did improve the sound, it took us several months to complete (working the odd Saturday here and there) and the end result, whilst louder did not seem very refined or well balanced. To avoid a repeat of these problems, this time I approached John Kleis, a car audio specialist in Reading and they have now completed the upgrade. They have done a fantastic job as the sound quality now surpasses anything I could have imagined! The plan was to take the outputs from the amplifier under the passenger seat and feed them through to the boot into a digital processing unit (Audison bit Ten) before passing it in to a 1000W amp (JL Audio XD1000/5 v2). There were complications here because the output signals from the amp all covered a restricted range of frequencies to be sent to specific speakers. So to overcome this, the outputs were combined via another box (an AudioControl LC8) to get a signal across the complete frequency range before passing it into the digital processing unit! The front component door speakers were replaced with Hertz ESK165Ls and an 8” Hertz ES200 Subwoofer in a ported box was added into the boot (with banana clips for easy removal). The various boxed components have all been secured neatly underneath the boot floor and are therefore hidden away. The balance and fader controls in the head unit still work as do the subwoofer settings. To reduce road noise, a considerable amount of sound insulation was added into the front doors and around the boot cavity. I also had the sound generator disabled by the dealer. The total price for the upgrade including labour was just under £2000 but the resulting sound quality is mindblowing. The system seems to particularly shine for vocals and jangly guitar solos. The guitar solo work within Nils Lofgren's "Keith Don't Go" from the album "Acoustic Live" is particularly stunning. There is plentiful bass even with the subwoofer well below the maximum setting, but it never overwhelms the rest of the frequency spectrum. Apparently the upgrade would have been considerably easier without the Canton upgrade. The technicians at John Kleis were very knowledgable and took a lot of care to calibrate the digital processing unit using microphones and audio signal analysis. If anyone is considering a similar upgrade and would like to sample the end result, do let me know and I can demo the system for you. I live in Basingstoke.
  19. Not sure if this should be under a separate heading but as I mentioned it here. Carista dongle procedure, it all went to plan but some differences. The dongle is available on Amazon at a discount price but not obvious. Sellers mention Carista Gen 1 & 2, don't get hung up on this, they are and do the same thing, the confusion caused is all about packaging. While you do get a free 1 months trial, you do have to purchase a full years subscription and cancel within 30 days. In the UK once the app has downloaded, dongle plugged in and both phone and dongle are connected, there is no longer a choice of countries as stated in some of the You Tubes, This I think is because the Carista app has evolved/updated, you get a choice of Germany, Europe/Other, choose the latter if in the UK. There is no Australia or America selection although there is still the choice of languages Depending on what you are attempting, the video/s are pretty much as advised. I got my big speedo back so am happy. 😄
  20. Yes, it will put back in what was taken out when starting in a matter of seconds regardless of battery size.
  21. Looks like a typical problem of power supply circuit on radio board.
  22. This is a 1.9 SDI Mk1 - so that will be a no.
  23. After seeing some videos on skoda vrs forums on Facebook the chav wagon definitely springs to mind. Seeing some of the content makes me feel embarrassed to drive one.
  24. What does it display? Do you have buttons on the steering wheel? Thanks. AG Falco
  25. Quick Google... "Laurin and Klement If you're in the market for a new Skoda, you will likely have come across a trim level called Laurin and Klement (L&K). This is the range-topping specification on a selection of Skoda models, and aims to make the car feel a bit more upmarket inside and out than their more affordable versions"
  26. Well done mate. 🙂
  27. Coolant leaks seem to be an issue (certainly on mine). Have a look for staining around the expansion tank that indicates something not right. Also check from a cold start if there’s alot of steam out the back. It’ll go away with a warm engine though so make sure dealer hasn’t warmed it up before you. The expansion tank lid should also click into place. If it doesn’t then likely it’s been on and off quite a bit.
  28. It’s not an open performance filter. it’s a filter that goes in the original box. don’t know how the correct terms in English, but I think you understand.
  29. I drive like a **** in my tool eater and I STILL get more range from a tank than this guy so he definitely has a problem!
  30. I suspect you have low compression on cylinder one and the ECU is cutting both the coil pack and the injector as @Breezy_Pete has already told you...
  31. Talking about charging out and about. We also charged at Beverley MfG 100kW charger which is brand new (not on Zap-Map yet) where we briefly got 60kW before someone else plugged in to the other cable on the unit (2xCCS 1xChademo) and knocked speed down to 30kW. I'm assuming its a split charge system and I got a bum deal. As this was meant to be a quick top up to get home, I left as soon as I had enough with little buffer if things went badly. An hour or so later we needed a comfort break and I decided to get a splash and dash at Birch services. Three chargers and only one free, which I plugged into and was getting a measly 30kW but immediately a Mercedes EQE plugged in to the same charger and split the charge down to 15kW. So a 10 minute break added about 4kW. turns out a good decision as it rained and consumption increased and we got home with 3% remaining. My point is that unless implemented well, shared charging is ****e. I want to go topped up fast on the road and both these chargers were severely compromised by split charging. In the case of Birch, the charge was slow anyway before it was split in half. We need a lot more places like Washington I mentioned in my previous post so on route charging works for everyone. EDIT: I was also a bit ****ed at the EQE driver who has a 400 mile range capable car and plugged in to shared charger when they had 77% battery. Of course he may need every last electron to complete his journey and I'll never know.....
  32. 1 point
Skoda always spell it "Simply Clever" so I would strongly suspect that the one with "Symply Clever" is a poor quality fake. Check also that what you end up purchasing really is a 32GB card when it arrives, recently I purchased a genuine Skoda SD card from eBay that had been described as 32GB but when I checked on arrival it was only 16GB. The seller refunded me and changed the description!
  33. A casting delivered to the machine shop that was not rusted would be rejected, "weathering" - leaving outside to corrode is an essential part of the casting process for stress relieving. If not done then the casting can warp when machined.
  34. I have just returned a Usb 3.0 to 'C' cable as it was a data only cable, I now have a Charging AND Data cable capable of rapid charging.
  35. Hiya, no idea what the job entailed, I just paid them £180 to do it.
  36. Do a compression test to see if cylinder 1 has much lower compression than cyls 2 & 3.
  37. Whiteline part number BWR25XZ, for Mk 7 Golf R/Audi S3.
  38. How many litres do you need to fill the tank back up - hopefully you are doing this until pump clicks off - as divide miles travelled by litres and time number x 4.5 to give mpg. What is your typical journey - distance and road types such as busy traffic, and terrain (is it hilly). An answer to these, especially answering mpg, will give people a starting point to comment as the 170-175 miles has no quantifiable information.
  39. A lot of people don't have the skills, interest or time to keep old cars going. And of course, they have to keep up with the Joneses who have a shiny new white-goods pile of pap on the drive.
  40. I actually found the same part on aliexpress for about £12 delivered. I’m waiting for it to be delivered and will report back on here once I’ve fitted it.
  41. Check front assist has not been turned off in settings. How do you know it’s not working. Always keep Radar clean
  42. 110*oC indicated oil temp could be perfectly OK then. The oil @ Normal Operating temp should be at the top of Area A. Be sure it is not overfilled from Cold checks. Your DSG OIl changes are @ 40,000 miles if you have a 6 speed DQ250 DSG.
  43. Fair play ... my bad here - I did a google search and some random independent suggested it. I hear what you say about it being in there for the longer term - I shall not worry about it in that case.
  44. So FINALLY!! The check valve at the start of the vacuum line was the culprit, it was partially blocked and while the line does go to full vacuum, it is slow to build up and it meant the turbo actuator would be slow to move and go outside of spec. I'm guessing the failing egr cooler diaphragm (replacing this on a 4x4 is not for the faint hearted) is allowing contamination into the line and travelling all the way back to the valve and luckily building up there and not damaging the vacuum pump. Hopefully this will all help someone else in the same boat down the line.
  45. 1964 Aston on the Hailsham by-pass earlier this afternoon: Glorious 😎 Gaz
  46. Thanks for the Information @ApertureS and @KenONeillI have not gone down any legal route yet. I have been caught out by the retailer already and I had to return the car to them 3 times in 2 months, hence I immediately think about my legal rights. A Skoda technician came to the house due to issues with the car and I am heading into the local retailer in the morning. I was going to include a question about this while they review the other issues but I wanted to be prepared with the forum's members advice. I will leave out discussing this in the morning. Thanks again 👍
  47. @Phil82 - As @ApertureS says above, it's a cast iron part, and that's perfectly normal.
