  1. I was hoping to never have to use this but an unlit Shropshire country lane had other ideas… On the way home last night and clipped a huge (even by Shropshire Council standards) pothole, instant and rapid deflation followed on an unlit road, luckily I managed to find a bit of a pull-in 50 yards down the road. I’d highly recommend investing a fiver in a wheel alignment pin as there’s not much of a prominence on the hub to get the alloy on to, this was compounded by trying mount the wheel by torchlight at the side of the road.
  2. Found this in the Westmorland gazette Finally, two Panda 4x4s set out from Kathmandu to drive through the Himalayas to the Mount Everest advance base camp, sited at an altitude of 5,200 metres. This was the first time that a small off-road vehicle achieved this goal, a feat made all the more remarkable by the absence of any modification to the standard Panda 4x4, except minor engine control unit adaptations appropriate for the quality of local fuel.

The emissions were a bit high but the smoke it kicked out under load was really bad. Everything I had done up until yesterday resulted in the amount of smoke coming out as in the video and a little more when it hits 5500rpm (on the limiter). Leaving the car in nd at 20mph and flooring the throttle no longer results in a black cloud behind me, so I've moved in the right direction.
  4. Not surprised to finally hear the admission that the Ferrari incident is the cause of the premium increase despite the earlier claims that it had been settled in his favour. I thought the video was an own goal and would at best have resulted in a 50/50 knock for knock as I probably said at the time, I would never have considered the overtake but assuming I had misjudged the conditions and done so (not to just embarrass a Ferrari driver) I would have kept the video to myself. It was myself that revealed that the Ferrari was on SORN not that it has any relevance regarding who was responsable for the accident. What goes around comes around.
  5. Just got my insurance renewal through from Privilege and despite having full protected NCB or 9+ years & admittedly one accident claim + two windscreens (stones/cracks) they hiked the premium from £452 to £1,118! So I used Martin Lewis' website and went through there and with the above, and got Full legal, guaranteed hire car, windscreen cover, foreign use etc, I got a quote from Aviva (with a £300 XS) of £568. A Whopping 65.25% saving by NOT auto renewing! 😲 So shop around.
  6. Lovely afternoon at Clumber - mist descended at 4pm..............
  7. I’d be investing how difficult it is to remove the vRS badge I think.
  8. Wait. You can’t just plough into things just because technically they shouldn’t be there? Hmm *makes note*
  9. Apologies after doing some more research. You will need to lift the gear gator trim, if the gear housing is WHITE then you will need 3Q0713128, if its a BLACK housing then you will need 5Q0713128A
  10. To be fair, I don't think the average user would really make a distinction between the bus itself and they the way attached components use that bus. I'll happily accept however that most major car manufacturers don't make great software developers.
  11. The car might have had a mod to run on low quality fuel (I remember that being an issue) but I doubt they could do much else apart from beef up the underside and equip the car with sensible editions for an expedition. It's a very basic car I've driven the original and it is genuinely surprising off-road. There is no centre diff, so it's 4wd can only be engaged on truly loose surface, much like an old school off-roader. Brilliant (and light), little car.

I know the car from day 1 and the original buyer was beyond meticulous. This included timing belts, high pressure fuel pump, servicing every 8k, batteries(2 of), starter motors, alternators and every receipt for anything (was a taxi, as you've guessed, so all receipts kept in date order). The 236k miles were done nearly all on the motorways and fast dual carriageways, the PO did mostly hospital and airport transport.
  13. To end this matter, I have been to the dealer today and it appears the valeters incorrectly sprayed the wheel areas with a deep clean acidic product ahead of doing the Lifeshine protection, Autoglym helped backing me up with the dealer and now it is booked in for both front calipers and rear discs.. Thanks all for your comments..

I contacted them because I am a taxi driver and anything I get charged with results in me losing my badge, ie, my job. If it fails in Feb, it fails and stays off the road until sorted as that is when dvla have it stated as the test running out. As a taxi, it is tested twice a year.
  15. It is obvious from your lengthy replies that you have a lot of free time and for you it is entertaining to kill it with all kind of unrelated stories. When I say "unrelated" that refers to the subject, or the title of a topic, useful for those who search for advice. Right now, if somebody needs technical help in this section, (many people used to come to this forum from tens of foreign countries), he/she has a hard time hunting for relevant information about his/her issue. Why is that? Because one has to read your novels about nothing and everything. I find that disrespectful towards all those who own a Skoda Felicia/Favorit. The testimony for my opinion are thousands of specific replies and guides I wrote for them, often with schematics, annotated photos, illustrations, and videos. For them I got in return their thanks and appreciation. As an example, everything went well in this topic, until you felt the need to be unnecessary sarcastic towards me for the simple reason you felt hurt for somebody else's feelings. Nobody asked you anything, nobody complained, nobody mandated you as his attorney, on the contrary, the OP thanked me for helping him with information from my very large technical library gathered in so many years working as a car mechanic. This forum is neither a contest for who is more sensitive, motherly, or woke, nor a platform for defending people deprived of their human rights. The OP was happy he got help in a forum totally unrelated to his car, although there are many SAAB forums out there. I have every right to express my dissatisfaction when those in need of help are wasting my time providing contradicting, incomplete, or plain wrong information. It is like going to a car garage and saying that you need your car fixed because the engine has a lack of power, the mechanic takes your word for it because the client knows better, then he verifies your claim, reports the engine is working perfectly, then you say "oh, I wanted in fact to say that the left blinker is not working all the time". Except that in real life they have to pay for extra diagnose time. So let's cut the crap and focus on technical matters, not in nursing the souls of deeply troubled people. I am sure you will take the opportunity to write a new novel in reply, without agreeing to any of my opinions. That is why I promise you that from now on I will not read anything longer than 2 rows coming from you.

Hi and welcome to the forum, we are all a pretty happy and friendly bunch here by and large. Right, firstly, sorry to read about your horror incident on the M5 last week. OK, so you are looking for a Superb ideally, and I certainly can't blame you, they are genuinely good cars and are extremely comfortable and spacious internally and in the boot as well. I'm on my 5th IIRC the first 4 were all company cars and when I retired 7 years ago, I purchased my old company car as I knew its complete history, I thought it made perfect sense. Apart from doing all the required servicing as required, the car never cost me anything extra and was reliable apart from the occasion when it decided to shred the alternator drive belt for some reason, maybe something was picked up of the road which get tangled up with it, I don't know. Last April it got written off sadly by someone pulling out in front of me, the car at the time was 9.5 years old with 78,000 miles on the clock. It was a 63 plate L&K hatch. It took me 2 months of searching around covering over 2,000 miles looking for another similar spec Superb which I did eventually find in a garage 150 miles away, but it had over 140,000 miles on the clock, although the car did not show signs of that in its condition. I was a little dubious of the mileage especially with my old one having low miles on it, however I had been watching a few car channels on You Tube and there was a Octavia in one of those that was brought for just £200 with 431,000 miles on the clock and the car was in excellent mechanical condition and was then subjected to some restoration by Skoda themselves and also a body shop did a full respray. The car was the sold and 5 years later the You Tuber decided to try and buy the car back again which he did with 460,000 miles on it. The videos about this high mileage hero are listed below if you would like to watch them. Anyway, the original 8 videos sort of convinced me that the service history was the key thing, if a car has a good history, then high mileage is not anything to be overly concerned about, so I went ahead and purchased that high miler that I spoke about above and it is doing me proud and my local Skoda dealer/service Dept are also telling me that I did well in buying it and that the car is in good overall condition and was a bargain. 17. Exactly - that's how I use mine. FWIW I find the amount of negative and cynical comments around assistance systems a bit disappointing. 6 things stick in my mind, and I look at it in this context: - The systems in my car are there for the benefit of others on the road, not just me. - If I were to lose consciousness behind the wheel, then LA and Auto Braking might lessen or even avoid possible disaster. Happened to a driver in my part of the world recently; heart attack, lost control, carnage. His earlier model car didn't have assistance systems much to the misfortune of others involved. - I mentioned previously that a friend of mine had a momentary lapse due to fatigue and the LA system in her car DID come to the rescue. - Modern assistance systems are just an updated safety contingency plan complementing seat belts, air bags and crumple zones. I'm happy to park my pride if it means modern tech will help out if I can't, even after 50 yrs of unblemished driving experience. - The incidence of alcohol and/or drug impaired drivers on the road is a perennial problem. I just hope those idiots behind the wheel haven't turned their systems OFF... - Q. Would I be happy if the pilot of the A320 I'd just boarded announced that he preferred to fly 'old school' and turn the computers off? As for Stop/Start, who cares? Lane Keeping Assist & Auto Braking, thank you!
  18. A quick update. I had the local garage (not VAG) replace the EGR valve. They had it for 2 days before Christmas. The job cost £688 all in (parts, labour and VAT). It has fixed the problem, the car now drives like new. Thanks for your help.
  19. Roosted beat me to it! Was also going to suggest a tank-to-tank mpg exercise. 42mpg sounds about right but I've found that displayed mpg is usually very optimistic. How many miles do you get to a full tank? I have the earlier 1.2tsi, and usually average mid 40's mpg with a mix of town and country roads. I get around 500 miles before filling up. My fuel gauge takes ages to drop from the full mark, so there is definitely something strange with yours. I assume you fill it until the forecourt pump clicks and cuts off?
  20. I just changed mine. Super easy job. In and out of the garage in 30 min. Minimal fluid loss, didn’t even top up. If you can change your oil, you can do this! I found it easiest to remove the whole assembly with the thermostat and the two hoses connected to it and then changing the thermostat. Temperature went to 90 C in 15 minutes and stayed there, even in -12 C outside temperature. An astmathic could blow through the old one!
  21. I know with mine I’ve got the xenon headlight range that I need to connect into via vcds and then into adjusting mode and then adjust it manually with the two white knobs on the headlight. I’m not sure if it might be the same with the Octavia? However, on my headlight the reflector popped out of the ball joint for the adjuster and it’s been ok for now.
  22. Hi, I’ve moved the topic to the yeti forum. better visibility here. re something else, N gauge. Years ago went to a relative in USA, they had a lovely n gauge in a wooden writing desk. I was a bit bored a few weeks back and began looking at desks and fleischmann. enjoy.
  23. All naturally aspirated cars. Most road have been turbo for the last ten years or so and they would have coped much better. Clarkson does like being dramatic. Aero piston engines in ww2 would typically operate at 20k feet up, in minus 20C. I think some may have had superchargers.
  24. OFF Topic Warning @Rooted sorry I wasn't able to PM this to you so have put it below for you (and anyone else). Updated petrol list, ethanol free seems to be no more, for those on the list at least. petrol.pdf
  25. Actually I suspect the software guys have done exactly what they've been asked to do. But I guess that doesn't really contradict what you've just said.
  26. Had this once on a long trip. Never repeated again so I didn't bother reporting it. As Steve mentioned, there is TPI for that issue, however I remember reading this TPI, it was saying that issue should be reproducible and customer should be able to show it. I guess this is somewhat standard for TPIs so will depend a lot on a workshop if they'll accept it and just make an update or will say they couldn't reproduce and thus will leave it as it is.
  27. Brilliant idea! Just ordered one - now £7.00 but worth every penny
  28. It's a 2.0 TDI DSG 4x4. Thank you for beeeing so helpful btw
  29. The CAN bus just sends the messages. The controllers are what tells you about the message contents. It's like you're trying to blame the phone line for someone telling you bad news.
  30. Hello, I only use Halfords for this Freebie and would never buy a battery from them. Results came back good battery and charging. Saving up to get it VCDS checked as the list of epc light possibilities is endless. I have a feeling it's in the tow bar wiring. Thank you
  31. We need a thread on Pacemakers or Iron Lungs.
  32. This is a handy catalogue and vendor of genuine bits at decent prices. Catalogue is not 100% up to date, but better than many of the online ones you may find. Car Parts Catalog - LLLParts
  33. Update SEL from 2016 doesn’t have these so got them ordered in and will fit in summer time They’re a lot thinner than I thought so should have just wrapped up a pitta bread and put them in there instead
  34. Welcome. I will bump the thread for you from this section. The other threads in section for other models often links to this. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/505730-weird-error-message-only-leave-vehicle-in-position-p/page/3
  35. @RicardoM you will not bully me like you attempt to bully others. As you have rejected my other ideas why not just put up posts directing posters to your technical threads and guides as this will give the very short, direct and technically correct answers and keep the thread short the way you want for the threads and this section to be - unless the posters are seeking or want to take advantage of more or wider things. I will gladly put a link to any of your technical threads and guides once I learn from you doing so as obviously I'd not know until then what is appropriate. 1) - You have thousands of posts, I have read but a few of that number yet you seem able to have read many of mine and take them as trolling because they are spread over more than one section. There are a lot of commonality on sections of a car website, generalities that apply, just as one example is a Felicia tyre that different to a Fabia or the basics of a tyre not apply to other models, do I need to be a technical expert in tyres to give general advice, details or opinions. 2) I don't even know what woke means but I'm pretty sure you'd have a very firm idea of what it means to you - so that it should not apply in YOUR section of this site 3) by being a jerk do you mean not always fully agreeing with you and fully doing as you want - and perhaps watching you take the **** and bully someone else and watching you throwing your toys out of the pram when they (not me) give you some of your own medicine back. Whether you intend it or not, and it's not on at least a few occasions, you aren't that polite to me usually (and for another). I think the "one who is cruel, rude, or small-minded" of jerk applies a greater deal more to you than me, otherwise I'd have given you much more and much sooner than the little bit of ****-taking here. I am not in any way in any competition with you especially about correct technical advice. You were demeaning me and someone else you knew nothing of and then gave the OP a bit of a snooty or ****ty telling off (part of which, but not your manner of reply, I agreed with if you check again) so (belatedly) for the first time I took the **** out of you - and you don't like it, can dish it out to others but not take it yourself. IF the OP doesn't want to read or respond to my post(s) that is fine, previously there was a response to one of my non-technical and bit of "good ol' times" posts perhaps the OP was just being polite but at least he was genuinely being polite. I do not need to stir any trouble as you start it so often already, if you can't take a tiny bit of ****-taking don't throw out so much trouble and ****-taking yourself. If you want me (and others) to only do as you want and you will not even consider becoming a Moderator, or take over the site, then Report me and try to get rid of me, and then perhaps try for others who also don't do things the way you want them done. Just because I dislike your attitude doesn't mean I don't see and understand that you often give very good advice, pity you can't sometimes resist being confrontational and offensive, and I don't mean just to me.
  36. @nta16 For somebody who admits has no technical knowledge, just knew once upon a time very few mechanics who performed miracles by scratching their head for a while, you have quite a bad attitude. Your only contributions seem to be 1) doing a great job trolling with thousands of messages many sections of Briskoda forum, 2) spreading your woke opinions, and 3) being a jerk although I explained to you politely how harmful is your behavior to the quality of information in this otherwise very well organized Skoda forum. I am sure the OP will understand that if he wants relevant help, about a car that, by the way, is NOT a Skoda, he has to provide accurate information, otherwise we can equally chat about what you like the most, generic rubbish in a pub, from the good ol' times when the metal sheet of the car was thicker and British mechanical engineers were greasier and more helpful. I am sorry if my pragmatic, to the point replies don't satisfy your trolling wish and your obvious appetite to stir trouble, but where I come from you have two reasonable options: either offer better technical advice than I do, or avoid making a fool out of yourself.

  38. My wipers park at a different position each time. Sometimes high, sometimes low. Don't go messing with the spline. This is from the user manual:- "Each time the ignition switches off for the third time, the position of the windscreen wipers changes. This counteracts an early fatigue of the wiper blades."
  39. Enjoyed my AliExpress camera for the last couple of years, thanks again for the heads-up, Wayland, although it’s never been 100% reliable, occasionally triggering a ‘parking pilot not available’ message. However, over the last week it’s hardly worked at all - it’s amazing how much I’d come to rely on it!! I’m reluctant to take the glovebox out AGAIN (!), but I can get to the connection in the tailgate fairly easily. So when it stops raining… Anyone else had this intermittent performance? Malcolm

  41. Try turning off the vibration; it will be a lot less intrusive. Then maybe the perceived negatives become tolerable providing benefit of the positives.
  42. But you are not the cheapest, when ever I have had quotes in the past you have been been about 100% dearer than any other
  43. Very easy when you know how, with the light switch in the off position push the knob in and turn clockwise, it then pulls out.
  44. I usually shop around and get a cheaper quote, and then go back to the original insurer and tell them I have got a cheaper price and 9 times out of 10 they match the lower quote
  45. Assuming the 1.6tdi Octy is the same as the 1.6tdi Superb then it is indeed 40k miles, however it was originally 80k but for some reason the frequency got halved by Skoda.( presumably some early age failures reported ) I still stick to 80k with mine though which is often enough IMO.
  46. I can confirm at least for the Octavia 2L TDI, mine has just had the timing belt replaced (recommended by the dealer at 200k km) at 215k. It is bloody expensive to change it here... so I wouldn't want to change it earlier than it was needed.
  47. Standard routine when I get in car ...... Press the start button and immediately turn off stop start and lane assist 🙂

The Camper Van / Light Commercial had just entered the NSL and will have likely accelerated to 50-60 mph as many do and your view as to if there were cyclists or walkers on the verge was likely limited. So you were wanting to accelerate from 30 to maybe 70 or 80 mph to get the pass in. The red car in front if they had been a bit further back and had looked and seen and indicated was more likely to do a safe pass than you. IMHO. You are supposed to anticipate, drive with due care and attention. Expect the unexpected, but the red car going for was pretty much certain, just like a red vRS behind going for it is just 'normal' even when unsafe to do, IME. The Insurers will decide anyway.
