Insurance renewal
A quick question that some kind soul will know the answer to. My son was insured with Aviva and at renewal time they declined to renew. It is not a decision based on his driving record or where he lives but a business decision. It doesn't not have to be declared as a declination on another insurance application. It is a high spec electric car which is working well. Has anyone else been declined? Does anyone know exactly why? Also, take this as a warning that at least one car insurer may not renew or indeed offer you a quote having previously done so.

Octavia IV Combi 2.0 TDI β 129 Hz droning above 125 km/h, temperature-dependent
check undertray/arch liners etc. Have had one that was slightly loose and made a weird howling sound at specific speeds. Must have caught it on something and ripped a couple of screw fixings. As it plastic it may be slightly softer when weather hot so might change speed it resonates at. Alasdair

ULEZ and other similar schemes we are being told are all about clean air for everybody but are they really just a means of making money from motorists?
@Graham Butcher "Around here." Very much relevant. For UK wide they will need rolled out UK wide. Getting full Mobile & Digital Receptions UK Wide might be a good idea. There are Average Speed cameras about on 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 mph & on 70 mph roads in many regions of the UK. It hardly requires having watched a Vlogger to know this, just pay attention while out and about driving.

Dashboard indicator led ghosts
Octavia mkII facelift 2010 Hello I've been having a problem with the left hand indicator LED on the dashboard being almost always on, with ~half brightness. It still works normally, as in when the blinker is turned to the left the led blinks between half bright and full bright. This ghost light only appears when headlights are turned on and for some reason disappears when cruise control is activated, see pictures below. Otherwise wouldn't bother as it affects nothing else but I got a to be fixed notice for it from yearly inspection and thus have to fix it. The cruise control indicator led has some of the same ghosts but did not get a notice for that. Would anyone have any idea where the problem might be or how to diagnose further? Pics, with cruise on and off and running lights on and off.

Octavia IV Combi 2.0 TDI β 129 Hz droning above 125 km/h, temperature-dependent
Second data point for you β and unfortunately it's another Combi. I have a 2026 Octavia IV Combi 2.0 TDI 150 (facelift). Same thing: - Booming/droning starts around 140 km/h and gets louder with speed. At 160 it's noticeably louder but it's the same tone β the pitch never changes. - Shift to neutral and coast: engine drops to ~1000 rpm, the drone carries on completely unchanged. So nothing to do with revs or the drivetrain. - Fuel level makes no difference. I thought at one point it only did it with a full tank, but I retested properly and that was a red herring. I can't answer your hatch/liftback question, but at least you now have a second Combi with an identical signature, on a different model year and in a different country. One more thing that might be relevant. Separately from the drone, my fuel pump is clearly audible at idle β louder than the engine β but only when ambient temperature is above about 25 Β°C. Below that it's silent. Same 25 Β°C threshold you're describing for the drone. Might be coincidence, might not. That temperature threshold is what I keep coming back to. The thing on these cars that changes state right around there is the active radiator grille shutter. It stays shut at speed when there's no cooling demand, and opens once it's hot and the A/C is working. Open shutters at 150 km/h means flow into the engine bay and a cavity that can resonate at a fixed frequency. It would fit everything you've described: front-ish location, headwind makes it worse, drafting behind another car kills it, nothing below 25 Β°C, and it appearing after a few months rather than from new. A few questions so we can look for a common part: 1. When you removed the roof bars, did you take off the longitudinal rails themselves, or just the crossbars? The rails sit in a channel with end caps and those are worth taping over. 2. Panoramic roof? Tow bar? Wheel size? 3. Have you had a look at the grille shutter position via VCDS or ODIS while driving? If it reads open exactly when the drone is there, that's most of the answer. 4. Has the dealer actually driven it with you, and did anything come back from a TPI search? I'll record mine and run an FFT so we can compare β if I land on 129 Hz too, that's a very strong argument to take to Ε koda. Two documented cases in two countries is a lot harder to wave away than one.

SOS error call workshop
Update, Despite not being able to find the right socket (looks like 10mm, I've got every one except that it seems) or spanner, I managed to disconnect the battery, and left it off for a bit. Result: The screen itself is magically back on, which is the important bit. And the SOS error has also gone, at least for now. There was loads of errors and warnings, they were cleared by steering lock to lock, opening and closing all the windows, and driving round the block. I expect it won't have resolved it permanently, but at least we can use the car in the meantime & if it happens again I'll disconnect the battery again.

Columbus Map Update 2026-2027 (MIB2 HIGH)
Great. I was wondering this morning where the "June" release was which we had February in that more targeted release. So this in the November release.... connected cars processing with streamlined production of the map files means the turnround is much quicker. Even the mib2 standard TomTom cartography gets that as well. These are Here Maps ofcourse. Will load it up later today on my Seat with those dual navigation FeCs.

Real exhaust tips for Kodiak MK2 Sportline
For those who are interested, I made the modification and it didn't costs that much and it was made at the dealer, so no warranty issues. The investment was much smaller than the difference between VRS and Sportline, as some colleagues suggested. Much much smaller....You don't need to change the bumper. When I ordered my Kodiaq I asked for offers for both models and the price difference was more than 6-7k for the same configuration, all options checked. I had Octavia RS before, 310hp, but I am very happy with the Kodiaq as it is - 204hp, enough for me, I'm getting old... Only for those interested, for the rest, just skip the post. But I thought there are others like me, at least to let them know it's possible. (made also the exhaust pipe to the exhaust tip). Also the virtual pedal works perfect.

How to find OEM part numbers of front wheel bearings for my Fabia 2
Better to remove the newish ABS wheel sensors before using a Gen2 kit on these bearings - I got away with it on one side but not on the other side! It was just the typical "from China" copy kit that I bought, just make sure that you line everything up so that you apply the force "in line", failure to do that, in extreme cases, will end up with the kit's thrust bearing track snapping - so it seems from someone on another forum, you can buy new thrust bearings on ebay though, I needed to do that when I snapped a bearing track on the lower arm rear mounting kit! Edit:- I ended up buying a couple of bearing assemblies from autodoc it was FAG that I chose. I had already checked on the FAG website that I was ordering the correct bearing. Probably other places selling FAG in UK now at a good price, it was Tayna that I used when buying SKF wheel bearing packs for my 2011 Audi S4 as they had them at the right price.

It is Maxton Design V2, bought it from Kopacek. Adds a lot to the look of front, love it. Also since last update I've added Rieger rear diffuser and Maxton sideskirts. Exterior is now complete for my liking. Yes it is L&K and maybe you should not do that, but I don't care, I do whatever I want π

Error code advice please
Had the 2012 Fabia Mk2 with a intermittent engine light problem, OBDii scanner states: P0441 Evaporation emission system incorrect purge flow. This only occurs occasionally, the error came on once in Feb 26, then again June 26 and now the light came on again yesterday. Could this be the N80 purge valve sticking intermittently or another issue, the randomness of it does not point to a major problem and I'm not happy to give it to a garage to charge me stupid money to investigate. Is it worth changing the purge valve or should I be looking towards something else? Thanks Ned

2015 VRS TDI - Coolant loss from expansion tank
Yesterday I drove 80 miles and so far so good. All dry around the expansion tank, coolant level dropped a bit but id expect that for the first few days. I am hoping this has resolved the issues. So to summarise issues, Hunting and canting engine Coolant loss Lots of "soot" out the exhaust Occasional whisps of white smoke from the exhuast No loss of performance was noted No error codes I started with the EGR cooler as I didnt have coolant escaping from the reservoir, this was tested for leaks and confirmed to be bad so it was replaced. This made coolant spill out of the reservoir. We spent some time looking at heating / cooling elements like radiator and confirmed a bad thermostat and a possible charge air cooler leak, the latter was suspected as it was quite wet in the cooler. As we were taking the cooler off to replace the thermostat we also replaced the charge cooler. None of this resolved the complaint so we did and sniff test and confirmed combustion gasses in the cooling system, the earlier test did not show this as a concern. I suspect the EGR cooler was releasing pressure and gasses into the exhaust. We chose to bypass the EGR cooler to test if it was a new bad part but the issues remained. So we pulled the head and confirmed there was spots where it was likely that the HG had failed, head tested and confirmed to be okay. Car rebuilt, all conditions, hunting engine and canting is resolved, smoother drive and generally a nicer place to be. So, what does all of this mean, how do you know if its HG failure? I would say the easiest way is if you are getting a hunting / canting from the engine and or an subtle but odd "cracking" type noise that cycles with the canting / hunting of the engine. This points to head lift and gasses escaping into the coolant. The big issue here is that other components could have failed hiding the biggest issue so ultimately a process of detailed diagnosis needs to be undertaken. If you are reading this and want any advice please reach out as I am happy to help as this has been quite an experience and I now feel like I know quite a bit about these engines! So for now that closes out this diag and fix thread. Thanks.

ULEZ and other similar schemes we are being told are all about clean air for everybody but are they really just a means of making money from motorists?
ANPR cameras are beginning to appear in all sorts of locations around here as are average speed cameras, even on roads where normally you would struggle to even do 50 mph on country roads. These cameras were even mentioned by YouTubes Geof Buys Cars on his channel a couple of years ago I recall. I expect that many never saw it because he is branded as an EV hater, incorrectly I add, he is pro choice but some people cannot stand anyone not being in total love with EVs.

Skoda 2024 L&K 4x4 wheel alignment
I had to get my MK3 280 4x4 L&K wheel alignment checked after I noticed some really bad rear tyre wear soon after I got the car at 2.5 years old. The inner tyre shoulder was down to the canvas on on both rears. However, there was still 3-4mm of tread depth on the outer shoulder & majority of the tyre tread. Very difficult to see the inside tread wear from outside the car unless you get the car up on a ramp or get under it. I took mine to a local alignment specialist with a 4 wheel Hunter setup. Apparently it's a well known issue with many VAG group cars that use the same back end suspension & the factory isn't that precise on how they set up the camber at the rear. Mine was out by quite a few degrees. Not had any rear tyre wear issues since (6 years & counting).

Columbus Map Update 2026-2027 (MIB2 HIGH)
New MHI2 P470 (2027) maps were released by VW. The content.pkg contains the following FECs/FSCs: 02300040 (Audi), 09300002 (VW), 08300002 (Skoda), 07300040 (Seat), 06300040 (Porsche), 03300040 (Bentley). This also means they'll run on Skoda no problem, as per usual. Link to the maps on the VW servers: https://navigation-maps.volkswagen.com/vw-maps/Update_25_26/P470_N60S5MIBH3_EU.7z

SOS error call workshop
OK, Having "resolved" the last error on our Octavia 22 SE Tech, now it's the turn of this error for us. Honestly, I'm thinking of getting rid of the car and moving to another brand, this new one seems way worse than my old Fabia. Anyone I've got the emergency call disabled problem, together with a warning light to do with the parking sensor, in addition the screen is permanently "off" so no SatNav, or music, and can't properly control the things that are controlled via the screen (turn up or down the air con for instance). With the emergency call, one suggestion is a hard reset of the infotainment system, but we've had it disconnected to prevent the other problem (random volume increases etc) so I guess that's not possible. I've mostly given up with our useless local dealer, if I ring them they'll just say they'll call back, and never do, they just want our money. I'm going to call an independent garage today, from what I've read above and online it seems likely that it's the OCU battery that's at fault, so perhaps they can replace that. I don't have the time, or the skill/confidence to do that myself. And I don't have one of these VCDS / ODB tools, so I guess I can't use the unplug the fuse and turn it on workaround since, then I'd have more errors (I guess?) and wouldn't be able to clear them. Pre garage I'm considering, doing a hard reset of the infotainment by disconnecting the battery? Would that help? I do have a charger, I could try charging the car but if this is because we are somehow reliant on a stupid inaccessible coin cell I guess charging it won't help? Any other ideas? Pressing the emergency call button doesn't do anything, not does holding it down, it tried to call someone but it didn't work, but made no difference to the error.. Any other ideas? Is it worth getting the fault clearance tool? Ideally the car would work properly before next Friday...as have a long drive to do.

P25AB00 Piston Cooling Oil Control Circuit High - Superb
Hope it stays gone. If it returns I think there should be a multipin cable from ecu in the engine bay fuse box. Not sure exactly where. On my octavia it seems to connect through base of box. Check it for loose pins/corosion. Hopefully it was a fuse/relay that needed reseated. Alasdair

ULEZ and other similar schemes we are being told are all about clean air for everybody but are they really just a means of making money from motorists?
The problem of untaxed vehicles can not be resolved until the problem of Unregistered vehicles or registered to the current keeper or driver is resolved and more ANPR cameras in villages, and towns and at filling stations. Β£2 million unpaid fines just in Dundee for LEZ, that is the Council or their Debt Collection Agency failing for what ever reason. Is it in some cases Unregistered Vehicles, untraceable drivers / keepers.
