  1. This the estate with 16" wheels and 205/55-16 tyres, VW trims with Skoda badges applied.
  2. 225/40R18 are easily damaged by potholes because the sidewalls are so low. 205/55R16 are rarely damaged by potholes, and are Europes most popular car tyre size. Low profile tyres are the equivalent of sleeping on a hard plank of wood. What you've done is take away your cushions.
  3. Had to get 5 people plus luggage, from Cumbria to Oban on Friday night. The A82 was blocked with snow, so we tried the A85. Ended up getting stuck for a few hours near Crianlarich because of a lorry that had slid down a hill and jackknifed. Didn't get to Oban until the "wee small hours" but the car did magnificently! 4x4 with winter tyres. No problem with traction whatsoever - even on the bits that hadn't been ploughed. However, it did do something odd... I noticed the lights weren't great, and assumed the lenses were covered in snow but one of them was switching off periodically. Now earlier this year, I bought an OBDeleven dongle and downloaded the fault codes (which could have been in there for a few years, for all I know) and one of them was something to do with a light (transformer, I think?) overheating. I didn't pay much attention at the time, because the lights seemed to work fine, but I'm wondering if the two are related? I'll plug it back in when I get a minute and see if the code has come back. Does anyone have any experience of overheating lights? (Or light transformers). Only other sour note, was a lorry throwing up a stone and cracking the windscreen, but c'est la vie!
  4. For now, a Dacia Sandero Stepway I bought from my brother
  5. Hi I've just had this problem. Phone disconnected mid navigation. The car and phone just cycled through the usual stuff and failed when trying to reconnect. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Android Auto, did nowt as did trying another phone. Just wanted to confirm a Long Press on power button reset the stereo. Now everything is working. Thank you all for the advice in previous posts.
  6. Quick update. Collected my car earlier, they did it a day earlier due to wanting to finish a bit earlier tomorrow. All working perfectly although we are now having Pot Noodle and Highland Spring Christmas day now. On the plus side I can now feel the wind and rain on my bald head whilst driving. Lesson learnt.
  7. What's the info/spec on the GTi? We ended up in a Golf GTi, it was a close thing though between the vRS 245 and a GTi PP 245. We didn't need the space and had already owned 4 Skoda's, so went for the GTi in the end.
  8. Many. ? So is it no ignition lights, no life, nothing? ? Where did the battery come from, was it tested, who fitted it? Give us a clue or two.
  9. Meant to add thanks to A G Falco for the steer here.
  10. The Winter tyres are the key to how good it was on ice then. ? What have you got on?
  11. 16 inch rims with higher profile tyres to match the rolling diameter of 19 inch rims with ultra low profile tyres will fill the arches to the same amount.
  12. The below VW Golf MK4 is on 6Jx15 ET38 5/100 57.1 alloy rims with 195/65R15 tyres. With the right rims or wheel trims even 15" wheels can look good. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf_Mk4#/media/File:2003_Volkswagen_Golf_(1J_MY03)_Generation_2.0_5-door_hatchback_(2015-07-09)_02.jpg
  13. 18" wheels and tyres are less comfortable as the sidewalls on the tyres are smaller, therefore less compliant. I went the other way, took 17" off and fitted 16", much more comfortable and less prone to damaging wheels in potholes. This all assuming you fit the correct tyres to keep your speedo correct.
  14. Hi all, just a ramble mostly but I've had my vRS since new in Sept 2004 and am now up to 216,000 miles on the clock. Over all it has been a good car and I've only had work on the steering rack and a new clutch (and a few smaller things and the usual wear and tear items of course). Oh, and the air conditioning went a few years ago. Far to expensive to get replaced on a car this age so I just have to suffer the hot, thankfully short summer heat. Apart from the rear drivers side foot well getting wet (yet to be investigated) it's still a good drive. It's very noisy when stationary with the engine running. Sounds a bit like an old tractor. So at 216k and serviced every year, how long is this car going to last. Anyone else with high mileage vRS of the same vintage? Lastly, what to buy next? I'm not that keen on the Fabia's available now and have been looking at the Polo GTI, maybe 2 or 3 years old (when and if I've saved a bit more money). Happy Christmas to all. Garry..
  15. Are you thinking the 18s will raise the height? They won't. The 3 tyre sizes are below and all are within a few mm in outer diameter. 205/55/16 (631.9mm dia) 225/45/17 (634.3mm dia) 225/40/18 (637.2mm dia)
  16. Between 18” summer and 16” winters is a big difference in comfort in favour of the 16” with higher sidewalls. The 18” feels better handling/grip on decent roads in the summer, but when the roads get bad it’s no longer the case. The 18 tramline more on worn motorway lanes too. I like the 205/55/r16, but if I wanted bigger I’d stop at 17 myself. FWIW 16” 205/55/r16 are way cheaper than both the 17 and 18” tyres too. The outer diameter of the stock 16/17/18 inch combinations are virtually the same to keep the speedo accurate. Springs do sag a little after a hard life, perhaps a new set of springs and bump stops + dampers if you’re so inclined would be money better spent?
  17. Hiya everyone, okay great news it is now working again after many attempts to connect this afternoon…. My car’s infotainment system had an update come to it when I turned it on, it asked me if I wanted to apply the update to which I said yes. 18. Yeeees its working 😍 after about 10 hours with breaks 😍
  19. Just to clarify, the pump is not actually pumping in the above photo so no pump pressure on the outlet ports. It's simply a static head of water similar to the water in the washer reservoir and it passes straight through the pump and leaks out of the vent hole. The original pump did not do this. I'm covering the two outlet ports to prevent it syphoning out of those outlets which would be normal, I think.
  20. Yeah we’ve gone from looks, better performance and economy to raised rise height in about 5 posts. I think the problem is you’re not sure what you want to do or why you want to do it. There is a reason Octavias are used as taxis up and down the country. They do it well, out the box. Just leave it.
  21. Be wary of the sun/pano roof on the golf, have a read here: GolfGTIforum.co.uk - An independent forum for Volkswagen Golf GTI enthusiasts.
  22. The 205/55/16s will be much narrower and that is the bigger saving with mpg over the different diameter. If economy is your end goal.
  23. from what I can see, it only applies the brakes as a very last resort, so it's just that you haven't got to that point yet. I don't think there is 'front assist without automatic braking' from what I can tell (albeit I've only been looking at the Mk III Fabia).
  24. Do you have a multi meter?
  25. Yes. One is even relevant! Start by checking that the battery terminals both make good contact with the posts.
  26. Luck you and hope it continues
  27. A bollard, railing, parked car. Is your collision sensor set to max or min sensitivity. The Red Horror symbol has appeared for many of us over the years. Unexpected and silly (on the part of the car). iI don’t suffer from spurious alarms these days with sensitivity turned down.
  28. Textbook CIA behaviour, you need to get to a safe house ASAP, stop using the internet and get a foil hat. That is how I read it the first time! Probably "extreme"
  29. Define last! If the engine goes bang you can always source another motor, as long as the shell is still solid then years. I've started doing some long overdue jobs on my VRS, rotten out backplates, brake upgrades, a sketchy brake hose and while it's off the road I've got to address some of the bubbling on the sills. Yeah my aircon doesn't work either, steering rack is leaking (again) and the damned window winder mechanisms, meh. But overall it's been, solid, reliable & nippy.
  30. Please note - I am not a mechanic or expert in anything. Whoops, sorry, at least I learnt something.
  31. At least you know the wet footwell thing is an easy cheap fix.
  32. No, because despite what @J.R. has implied, there is no actual butterfly on a diesel engine, just a venturi.
  33. Clumber Park earlier today........
  34. Thanks. I had the same question on a Fabia Estate Mk 3 - Front assist wasn't mentioned in the specs from the dealer, but if it's in the options menu, it must be fitted I guess. I'm not going to deliberately drive into something to see if works though... I need to warn my wife what to do if it comes on - am guessing it's a bit terrifying if it deploys and you're not aware of what it's doing.
  35. I got the point and now do not want to change the wheels and tyres anymore. 16inch doesn't look good in this car..So probably I wouldn't go for 16inch either. I will stick what I've got. probably invest some money to upgrade something else. I am open for any recommendation. Just wanna give my car a treat.
  36. I don't want to be too sarcastic, but how long is a bit of string? There's no given life on these really. It's done well this far. I say just keep looking after it and save up for when it does go bang. Reckon you could see another 50k miles out of it, but don't hold me to that.
  37. No. Fuel pressure is fixed at 3 bar by combined filter/pressure regulator near tank.
  38. Yes but mine tried to escape twice.
  39. Yeah this is right, there's a real detailed link here, also read somewhere that the led lights do still get hot and can be a bit bigger so position needs to be considered, not sure how much freedom there is... Please do report back here with progress, my ultimate goal is to repair the fault, then replace bulbs with diodes. I'm following closely! Any advice on bulbs or fitting/coding (no code better for me!) would be appreciated. Also worth considering, as the front and rear interior lights run through the same rig, both sets should be replaced to reduce that current running through the crappy board in the main unit (just my hunch challenge welcome).
  40. @automassI never even gave the fuel a thought it was more about the comfort of the fare paying passengers, then the cost to you of the 18" wheels then tyres.
  41. I got an update from my dealer yesterday. There is still no build week for my vehicle but they did say that they are getting more updates each week about build weeks being allocated for vehicles and they are confident that they should have a build week for mine soon.
  42. From the workshop manual: Please note the 'remove the headlight' step so you'll need to remove the front bumper... No idea if it's possible without removing the headlight
  43. Just make sure you go for a reputable brand, personally in a situation like this id either fit brand new genuine or fit a second hand genuine before i fitted some aftermarket rubbish. But thats just my opinion of it.
  44. 1 point
'Tubs is much better going from Hawes north, in my opinion. Any sunny summers day you'll have to share it with a replica Tour de France unfortunately. As VRT says, the road from hawes down to ribblehead is also a great road. Bellerby Ranges out the top of There's loads of variations of route that's good depending on what type of road you want to go on where you're starting out and where you want to end up, but an easy starter if buttertubs is a must is: Ripon - Masham - Leyburn - Hawes following the A6108 to leyburn then onto the A684. In hawes turn right before the road splits into the one way through the town centre, up and over tubs to Thwaite. Turn left at the end and follow along until just after Keld where there should be a couple of hairpins up a steep climb. Follow that all the way along and you'll come out at Tan Hill, englands highest pub. From the pub you can drop down into Reeth and loop back to leyburn, go along to hawes and down ribblehead back to the A65/A59 or you can drop into Richmond to access the A1(M). If you want more detailed routing, I'm happy to throw you some maps depending on what you want. I'm reasonably local 😁
  45. You can have front assist without adaptive cruise control - which is what I expect the OP has. Unfortunately, if you do only have front assist, the radar unit fitted is very unlikely to support ACC
  46. If you get too close to the car in front the mileage on the cluster will go away and a little picture will appear telling you to back off. It’ll also beep at you loudly if it thinks you are going to hit the car in front. It’ll also do an emergency stop for you if you don’t take action but I wouldn’t rely on that bit.
