  1. I'm an HGV driver, and start early morning which at this time of year means driving around in the dark for a couple of hours. The amount of berks who rely on this auto dip functionality is a real pain, as (I believe) their headlights don't dip until they detect my beam. Which, on a long straight, isn't until they're quite close to me, meaning for a good few seconds they're heading straight towards me lighting my entire windscreen up with their glare. It's not only dangerous, but can be very painful too. Auto High Beam Assist should be banned by manufacturers world wide. Trust me, I'm no wimp, but you try handling a 42 tonne fully laden truck with trailer on a B road in the rain / mist / fog or even just in the dark, when your entire windscreen is lit up like the face of a torch by some idiot approaching you with their high beam turned on and the glare not only disrupts your vison, but burns at the back of your eyes too 🤬

  4. I'm 100% with you, this is not the first poster on this forum to not only be wantonly ignorant of the effects of their abdicating decision making of such a simple function on the safety of oncoming drivers but also insults them. The central barrier on autoroutes and dual carriageways also stop the high beam assist from recognising oncoming traffic and hence dazzling them, some new HGVs do it too, probably all the new ones have it but as the drivers are professionals like yourself I reckon very very few use it. Editted, its easier for an HGV with said system to see over the barrier and detect oncoming headlights because of their height.
  5. I've had Skodas of one kind or another since 2009 and have always been happy with them. I changed from an Octavia MK3 to a Karoq a year ago. Car was a year old when I bought it. It's a Karoq SE Drive with the 1.0 litre engine. I'm in my seventies now so don't do as much motorway driving as when I was working. That said, the car will easily cruise at 70mph when I do go on the motorway. I find the Karoq an easy car to live with. It's easy to get in and out of and is probably the most comfortable Skoda I have owned. It is big enough (but the boot isn't as big as the Octavia's). Like all modern cars, there's too much technology on it for me but I just use what I need and ignore the rest. I bought a spacesaver spare wheel as those gunge kits are a waste of time in my view. In short, it does the job for me and I am happy with the purchase. The problem with asking about different models of car is you will get loads of different answers and opinions. For me, I'd stick with what I know and feel comfortable with and would keep well away from the £40k road tax threshold. That's far too much to pay for any car in my opinion.

  7. Probably need 1/2inch to 3/8th adapter for the wrench though https://www.screwfix.com/p/magnusson-3-8-drive-hex-bit-socket-rail-8-pcs/8366v#product_additional_details_container
  8. I meant a socket bit, as I've always used a torque wrench.
  9. Yeah, indeed. Octavia is a budget car for the fleet's in some companies. Let's say, for middle level management. Superb is totally different car. I had in the past Superb 2 2.0TDI 170p.s manual gearbox, Superb 3 2.0 tdi 190 DSG 6 speed, and now Superb 4. Do not get me wrong. Octavia is a nice car, nothing more or else. By humble opinion.

Mine stays on until I have gone the few yards it takes to self lock the doors. My 2018 Octavia was the same.

Are you expecting it to go off immediately you go to drive ? Both my previous MY2021 and the current MY2025 do stay on until you're moving forward
  12. Driving and owning EVs one does not have in mind engine/gearbox worries. After expensive repairs in my last ICE car, a mark 3 Fabia 1.4 diesel, nearly £800 to fix a simple thermostat issue as it takes 3 or 4 hours to fix as engines have become so complex. EV ownership, after nearly 4 years, no issue with either EV on mechanicals and servicing costs half to a third of previous ICE cars. Energy input costs about a fifth of previous ICE cars. Cannot see ever going back though it is comforting to have a hybrid on the drive also. In a year or two when EVs can do close to 500 mile range then I see no need to even have a hybrid as a backup.
  13. Oh yes, it was a booked appointment alright. I even agreed with the service advisor that there might be just over a 1000 miles remaining but still they complained. Now...if I'd been 1000 miles OVER my mileage then all my warranty would have been voided. You cannot win with Skoda dealers.
  14. 2 points
I can. OTOH I'm taller (4'22") than most wives.
  15. If I was looking at a 10 to 13 year old car, I'd be more concerned about condition than "2 or 3 owners".
  16. In Germany with their special problems. Having just come back from Germany and watching lots of the news stories about Germany it is a story which all of Europe and probably further afield is watching. When EV subsidies ended sales of EVs crashed somewhat as well as the Germany economy has been having a bad time, ironically, in some considerable part, because they, VAG, BMW, Mercedes, failed to make good and good value EVs and hence that part of the automotive sector are in real problems. VAG do make good EVs ie the two Skoda EVs and the ID7 is getting plaudits but the ID 3, 4, and 5 have not worked out well. One point of note is when the 7,500 Euro subsidy was taken away the cheapest EV on sale, the Dacia Spring, just reduced their sale price to cover the subsidy ie it went down to around 15k Euros as EV manufacturing costs, mainly due to batteries becoming much cheaper, are falling like I stone, now with parity costs to ICE and by th ned of this year cheaper than equivalent ICE. This has now given the crown of being the largest EV market in Europe to the UK and with so many very good EVs appearing on the car market throughout Europe I think the 28% share o for EVs can be reached due to EVs cars, vans and trucks offering such great economic sense to buyers. Renault contacted me during the week to look at trading my excellent Zoe for a Renault 5 which something I look forward to and helping the EV sales. The Zoe is a great car and even 3.5 years on it surprised me and I learn how good it is. 2 journeys in the last two weeks, one in the 2024 European Car of Year Scenic ,smaller battery version, and secondly in the Zoe ZE50, that near 200 miles journey, 40 mile round trip, in cold conditions, achieved at low cost, high profit as claiming the 45p per mile tax relief. Charge at my brothers in Cambridgeshire and a quick zap charge at the excellent and awe inspiring Rugby services, 10 minutes in Scenic, less than 20 minutes in Zoe, will be less than 15 minutes in the Renault 5, and happy days, home for 8 o'clock footie. Ever significantly better EVs are coming out also by the month. Shame the battery tech in mainly Chinese or Korean the West really missed out on that technical bandwagon and with the exceptions of TESLA Berlin and Renault the Western Automotive companies have really failed to grasp the EV technical brief and economic opportunity. Germany is in a right pickle and it shows up in their economic news as being Europes Automotive powerhouse to finding itself in an existential crisis, sad to see and a lesson to us all. Now China has rejected German cars, as they produce good cars at a far lower price now, and with the USA now about to slap punitive tariffs on EU cars being imported to the US their goose looks cooked. The should look at producing more Skodas and SEATs and make cars in cheaper manufacturing companies else they will not last out this decade.
  17. I have been aware of the effects of climate change since the 1970s and in line of what you say above have been very conscious of where one lives in terms of increased flooding risk and this in the UK that is mostly quite resilient against flood risk but with particularly concern for London, as you say, but also the Somerset and Gwent Levels, The Fens etc. Here is Worcestershire and Gloucestershire the flooding of 2007, the devastations to Tewkesbury and Worcester stick in the memory. Worcester has millions spent on it for flood defences and this is the nub of the problem in my view. Not slowing down climate change has a cost of its own meaning more flood and sea level defences. As we have just seen with the Éowyn and its record wind speeds climate change has multiple effects, higher wind speeds, more water being carried by the storm, each 1% rise in temperature means that 7% more water is carried by the storm. The effects of climate change have a material cost in both countries, counties and individual have to spend much more to protect oneself against these increasingly violet elements. In my industry if storms are more violent then, for example, there will be hours or days when we cannot get a container ship to dock in Felixstowe, the UK's business container port. Not doing climate change restraining measures has its own cost. Some of us are watching what New York State is doing in relation to adding an additional levy on hydrocarbon sales to fund defences against the effects of climate change. After the severe flooding on the southern edge of Manhattan island, flooded streets, tubeway stations it was a wake call for cities and states as to what can happen with these more violent storms and their surges flooding coastal land which cost billions to repair after the floods and billions to then build sea, river defences, who should pay for that ? New York has decided that Fossil fuel companies should pay which should help the transition to electric as it prices ICE vehicles out. Yours and my generation have already got the igmany for being the first generation in known history of the following generation being poorer than our generation due to handing them a Western economy that is providing less economic benefits we enjoyed and now it is becoming clearer that will will also have massive climate adaption costs as well economies that are being out stripped by Asian ones like China and now we can see there is billions that need to be spent on climate resilience. Better choices we make now could save the next generation and the ones after that those massive bills for weather resilience and I want that for my kids and grand kids. https://www.spglobal.com/commodity-insights/en/news-research/latest-news/crude-oil/010325-new-york-to-charge-fossil-fuel-companies-75b-under-climate-cost-recovery-law#:~:text=January 03%2C 2025-,New York to charge fossil fuel companies, under climate cost recovery law&text=The state of New York,Climate Change Superfund Act (S. "The state of New York will assess oil and gas companies a collective $75 billion over 25 years under a new climate law signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on Dec. 26. The Climate Change Superfund Act (S.2129-B) aims to shift the burden of climate mitigation from taxpayers to fossil fuel companies by charging them for the greenhouse gases they emitted between 2000 and 2018. The funds, to be collected at a rate of $3 billion per year, will help pay for infrastructure upgrades, extreme weather response, cooling systems and other climate-related investments, which could "easily reach several hundred billion dollars" in state costs through 2050, according to the legislation's text. "New York has fired a shot that will be heard round the world: the companies most responsible for the climate crisis will be held accountable," state Senator Liz Krueger, a Democrat and lead sponsor of the legislation, said in a statement. The legislation, creating what it formally called a "climate change adaptation cost recovery program," was first introduced in January 2023. It passed the state Senate in May by a 43-17 margin. The law applies to producers and refiners that emitted more than 1 billion tons of greenhouse gases over 18 years. Krueger said the "polluter-pays model" mirrors existing state and federal Superfund laws, which tax companies to cover the cost of cleaning up hazardous waste sites. Earlier this year, Vermont passed similar legislation that applies this model to greenhouse gas emitters. "

my new work van has it too, and because its a 2024 build its programmed to come on EVERY time you turn the key.. stop for fuel? its all back on... jump out for 30seconds to unlock a gate and take the keys with you out of habit... all back on again. i turn it off everytime because a) the speed warning bings at you for 1kph over the detected speed limit even though the gps speed shows the indicated speed is higher than actual.. b) the evasive steering twice sent me hard right to "avoid collisions" with cars turning left from filter lanes towards oncoming lorries.. c) the autobraking kicked in one damp night because i was approaching the bottom of a hill.. on a motorway... d) the lane departure tries to either push you into the ditch or onto the wrong side of the road on narrow zroads depending on where it picks up a faded centre line or the ditch.. i hate it all...
  19. When a UK Dealer, “Car Trader” in DVLAs words, buys a vehicle a different part of the V5 is completed, so they are recorded as the keeper but crucially not the registered keeper because they don’t buy Road Fund Licence. It’s not SORNed either so it’s in transition. I’ve previously bought a dealers demo vehicle, which they had registered and taxed, I became the 2nd owner. My Karoq was bought from a dealer, the first owner was a Skoda employee, the Dealer bought it through a closed Skoda auction I am the 2nd owner.
  20. I've never worked on a Kamiq, but every VAG vehicle I have changed brakes on has been a 7mm hex. An annoying size that is never in tool sets and I had to obtain as a 1 off.
  21. So after this ''torture'' i took a photo from the coolant temperature factory gauge, here is the highest point (as already knew it from the last trip) for my Trusty. I disassemble and clean the kit and returned home declaring a Victory !
  22. I drove the car for few minutes in low-middle rpm,the temperature rise and the fan start spinning. I parked the car in an alley, installed the kit drop some blue liquor and rev it by hand, the fan started again and this happened another 2 times. The whole liquor was moving left and right depending the rpm (idle- higher) but the colour didn't changed. I decide to insist more to be 100% sure that's why i made a (sloppy) tape work to ''seal'' it more and insist in higher rpm revving by hand.
  23. I believe if the engine ECU doesn't get a valid signal from the crank sensor it will stop enabling the fuel pump relay. Not saying it is that, but it may be one possibility. When attempting and failing to start it, does the rev counter indicate anything? (If it has one). The fuse 7 business seems like it could be a clue; can you share the reg number or VIN to allow me to look up further info. In a rubbish WiFi environment presently though, so can't say when I may be able to investigate.
  24. I've done mine. Not too difficult. The slide pins need an Allen key to remove them, I think it was 6mm but can't be certain. Thing to watch is when you put the slide pins back in. They are very easy to cross thread so make sure they are perfectly in line before you screw them in and only tighten them using your fingers until they are well in. There is a bit that sticks up on the bottom of the carrier that the caliper must be fitted inside to get the pins to line up properly. I can't remember what torque I used on the slider pins, 20Nm comes to mind but worth doing a search online to check.
  25. Had a head gasket on my toyota people carrier go. Used Kseal to keep me going as we were using it on holiday. Lasted for a couple of months. Also heard good results from steelhead. Supposedly better than Kseal. Not sure where you are but I did buy an octavia from a garage in Kirkintiloch. Vw specialists and were really decent to deal with. Proper old school garage as well. Father and son were running it at the time (4-5years ago) If its not too far might be worth a call. https://www.thecrossgarageltd.co.uk/ Alasdair
  26. by fixing the fault? I think you are going to have to give a bit more information if you want more specific help.
  27. I agree with you Jim. And for a 10-13 year old car I would almost expect 3 owners. Bought to resell is a bit cheeky, a quick turnaround but dropping the value in the process. Hope this does not become common, a new way to make a few quid. Flip side is it’s not been resold due to a problem.
  28. Barnett VW in Dundee refused me the VW Group service offer on my Skoda Fabia vRS, Same as a Polo GTI Twincharger. It was a £299 service including Spark Plugs. Skoda Dundee wanted £249 & no spark plugs. Looked very much some agreement between them and Skoda Specialist Cars Dundee, John Clark Group & nothing to do with the Computer or Service Record. I asked if they were operating a cartel and would the Service Manager like to talk to Radio Tay who i was about to call or a Journalist from the Dundee Courier or Evening Telegraph. She went away through to an office and came back and said she could book it in, or if i wanted to leave it there was an available service bay and technician. She looked up the car and then asked if i wanted a courtesy car or a lift into town, i said i needed an Automatic and she said but your car is not an Automatic, and i said indeed it was exactly like the Polo GTI,s were, with a DSG. She said she never knew that. I got a Golf DSG for a couple of hours and when i came back the car was serviced, printed out record and £279.
  29. No idea...it's a mystery. Still it's now sorted. I'm not going back to any Skoda dealer anytime soon.
  30. Yes, should be always parallel as their sprockets are same size and driven by same chain. Chain has jumped a fair bit. Surprised that the compression test didn't appear to show bent valves. I can't picture how that can be the case.
  31. I said exactly the same thing after struggling with slow starts... For ~€100 it can make a huge difference to the car.
  32. Was it a booked appointment, as in a I want you to do this and I will give you my money for doing it. At which point, on arrival they (initially) said no? WTF - as they say, intelligence has its limits, but stupidity knows no bounds 🙄 Gaz

This happened to a car I had, just a week before handing it over as p/x for a new car. Stunk to high heaven, and ended up taking everything out, and using a professional cleaner/detailer to deal with it. They have access to far better cleaning products, than Joe Public, and can dry out the carpets and seats in no time. No come back from the buying dealer, so imagine it was sorted, and go a reasonable price. Was in 2015, so price would vary, but then it was done for £100.

🤞🏼It all goes ok for you PedalBin 😁
  35. 236mm vented brake discs (as Felicia has) but we need diferent calipers, the point is: Which?
  36. Wondering just how much better the R5 is going to be than my Zoe ZE50 ? The Zoe has and still is proving to be just incredible. The office where my boss is based has moved from LIverpool to Felixstowe and therefore journeys if 246 miles round trip in now 390 miles. This means at least one charging stops and I mitigate the costs of this by stopping over with my brother in Cambridgeshire and charging at his house using a granny charger. The Zoe is doing over 200 miles of range even in the cold conditions. The really big difference in the 5 rather than the Zoe is going to be the public DC charging rate which is twice as fast on the R5, liquid cooled battery pack, compared to the active air cooled pack in the Zoe. The reports say the R5 is a good drive, will soon see in a few weeks, ie March, just how the R5 stacks up compared to the Zoe, same battery pack size of course. Charge curve looks fine, similar to 92 kwh Scenic but not quite as handsome as my 65 kwh version ie good to 45% SOC, OK to 75%, after that probably time to get on the road. Will see, thought aboiut the 40 kwh LFP version and will keep as eye out on the specs as it might be a bit bigger than 40 kwh and of course can be charged to 100% easier rather than usually only charging to 80,85, 90, 95 % as one does with the NMC Lithium batteries Renault have used so far in their cars. The R5 has 11 kw V2L as well which could be finanically good too. https://evkx.net/models/renault/5/5_e-tech_52kwh_150hp/chargingcurve/#google_vignette
  37. ... have come and gone, more as a "fashion statement" than any form of engineering, in waves since about 1980CE.
  38. Just to clear this up, in the top picture ( orange car ) the daytime running light DRL is split over the 2 levels of the headlight, you can also see the led main unit is a projector type.... this is the matrix version. In the lower picture, the DRL is one bar and goes across the whole light, not dropping down in the lower part. You can also see that the unit is full of reflectors.... this is the standard led version. ( a downgrade on the previous LED version which was a projector (non matrix) version)
  39. there is already publicly available patch.
  40. New doesn't mean good. Dampers may have different damper rate. Now when we are talking about it, when I bought my car, it had some aftermarket, extremely stiff dampers with very similar behaviour that you're describing. They also had smaller body, so the front wheels had 2° camber angle. The engine mount is identical between Favorit and Felicia. The only difference is the rubber bushing, favorit's is more likely to collapse under the engine's weight. The gearbox mount is entirely different, so it's hard to say, but I doubt there is a difference. Felicia is also quite low under the bell housing, skidplates were quite popular acessory for lowered cars.

The logo isn't the problem... the wheel is on the wrong side of the car! When the EU comes to it's senses and applies to join the British Empire, we will make you drive on the right side of the road, which is the left side. All clear? 🙂
  42. Thanks RodDuggan, I have now figured it out and have now turned off the lights in the rear of the cabin.
  43. Have you found the Audio, Electronics & Security part of Briskoda yet? In that part of the forum, they have the correct latest map downloads for the appropriate systems.
  44. Hey dude! Sorry only just saw this Mine was a genuine Westfalia towbar with the wiring harness so it was very much plug and play, and the mounting holes in the chassis were already there Not sure about non-genuine I'm afraid! My Octavia also had the towbar/trailer prep from factory so I didn't have to worry about wiring in the loom from the fuse box etc. Essentially, all I did was jack it up, pull off the tail lights and bumper, fit the towbar, plug the harness in and then bolt the bumper back on 😄 didn't need any special tools although a bumper removal kit is handy!

How longs a piece of string? Ours failed at 250,000 ish but it was only the braided link between the solenoid and the motor- easy repair. New one greased up before fitting to stop corrosion on/in the braid.
  46. Problem solved!!! using OBD11 09 Cent. Elect. module ----> basic settings --->headlight basic settings --->factory setting... lights finally moved up to the factory settings then one error will come to your dashboard... don't panic... you have to make Acknowledge basic settings... Error gone.. everything is working perfect... and now it's perfect again.
  47. Up to 3m resting on the dashboard for the estate, use padding in front to protect the windscreen from emergency braking. You can load 3m long stuff in my case metal stud wall sections up to about 10cm high, 60cm wide before the rake of the screen reduces the length.
  48. autodoc are listing the following Bilstein B6 DCC shock absorbers for the Superb MK3 2.0TSI 280HP 4x4. You could always contact Bilstein directly with your car's VIN number to confirm these are correct, but I doubt they do any other Bilstein B6 DCC models that would fit. These same shock absorbers are also used on the Passat B8. There is also Bilstein B4 DCC, but they might not be much cheaper than the Bilstein B6 DCC. 49. Hi welcome. If you mean fuse 44 "Cigarette lighter, 12-volt power socket" as in the 07.2018 Owner's Manual that looks like a standard blade(?) fuse to me, 15 Amp is blue. Free VWSkoda PDF downloads of the Owner's Manuals from this VWSkoda website if you don't have the handy (no batteries needed, can be viewed in daylight) paper printed copy. - https://manual.skoda-auto.com Seems a waste to get something that small through the likes of Amazon.
